Exciting News for National Apprenticeship Week! With the 10th annual National Apprenticeship Week just around the corner (November 17th - 23rd), we’re excited to spotlight our Hillsboro Advanced Manufacturing Youth Apprenticeship Program and the amazing partnerships that make it all possible! This fall, we kicked off our second cohort of talented high school juniors from the Engineering Technology CTE Program, where they are guided by our great CTE instructors, Mr. Matt Loun and Misty Lewis, at Century High School. These students are now diving into hands-on learning at Jireh Semiconductor Inc. ! The Youth Apprenticeship Program began with a shared mission: connecting students to meaningful careers that match the evolving and growing workforce needs of Hillsboro. With support from the City of Hillsboro, we’ve created an apprenticeship program that combines classroom learning with real-world experience, giving students an early advantage in high-wage, high-demand fields. These students are gaining skills that go beyond the classroom, working alongside manufacturing professionals and mentors, and exploring the exciting world of Oregon’s advanced manufacturing sector. The program allows them to further develop technical skills, explore career pathways, and prepare for future success. By Summer 2026, the apprentices are expected to graduate high school with a Certified Manufacturing Technician credential that will open new doors to promising career opportunities in advanced manufacturing. We’re grateful to the City of Hillsboro and Jireh Semiconductor Inc. of Alpha & Omega Semiconductor for their commitment to supporting the next generation of skilled professionals. Join us in celebrating our apprentices, the mentors guiding them, and the partnerships that are making it all happen! Community 101 and Schnitzer Cares (formerly CommuniCare) Engage Century and Glencoe Students in Philanthropy Community 101, taught by Erica DeBois, prepares juniors for careers that involve working with and helping people in our community. Thanks to generous support from the Portland General Electric Foundation through The Oregon Community Foundation, students have access to $5,000 that can then be given as grants to nonprofit organizations. Students research community needs, determine an area of focus, and identify local charitable organizations that specialize in meeting that need. They solicit proposals, vet them, and determine which of them will receive the grants. This year, students focused on organizations that address substance use disorders and awarded their sub-grants to Youth Contact ($2,000) and For a Health ($3,000). Schnitzer Cares (formerly CommuniCare) is an organization that works with high school students to raise money for subsequent donations to nonprofits of their choice that support community needs. The HAROLD & ARLENE SCHNITZER CARE FOUNDATION is the funder; for every $1 raised by a school/group, the CARE Foundation will match it with $10. Glencoe’s Student Government class, taught by Tom Stephens, sent out a survey to gather input on the area of need students most wanted to see addressed, and they selected healthcare. Students organized several fundraisers, including 2 Miracle Minutes at a basketball game and a theater production, and sold treats in school. They raised approximately $1,600, bringing their total to just over $16,000. Twelve nonprofit organizations applied for sub-grants, and students narrowed the applicant pool down to four. They then conducted interviews with each finalist. In the end, they donated $2,000 each to The David's Harp Foundation, Inc. and Peace In Schools, and $6,000 each to Educate Ya and Healthy Living Community. Junior Rona Isakharov and senior Reagan Thomas led this year’s Schnitzer Cares (formerly CommuniCare) effort at Glencoe shared: “We have both been in Communicare for all of our years of high school, and it has meant so much to us and our team. Communicare has given us the opportunity to be the one in charge and have our voices heard. Being part of this process has taught us so much about time management, teamwork and communication, and what it means to be leaders. With no other organization would we have been able to donate this amount of money to nonprofits and see the direct change it was able to make. We are so grateful to our advisor, Mr. Stephens, for his endless support; our Communicare liaison, Kelli, for answering all our questions; and, lastly, to the HAROLD & ARLENE SCHNITZER CARE FOUNDATION for their generosity in serving our community.” #philanthropy #studentleadership #communityservice #ProudToBeHSD #KnowValueEmpower
