?? BREAKING: 'Limelight Rainforest' Wins $5M XPRIZE for Revolutionising Biodiversity Monitoring! ?? In just 24 hours, Limelight Rainforest achieved something extraordinary: harnessing cutting-edge NatureTech including drones, remote sensing, bioacoustics and e-DNA sequencing, they identified thousands of species within a dense and diverse remote 100-hectare tropical rainforest plot. This achievement, which secured them the $5 Million Rainforest XPRIZE, is the result of a year of relentless efforts involving over 60 experts, including engineers, biologists, anthropologists and Indigenous peoples from around the world. Here’s how they did it: ?? Deployed 10 ‘Limelight’ floating research platforms high in the rainforest canopy, each equipped with state-of-the-art tools: 90 microphones, 5 cameras and 5 e-DNA samplers to record sounds, capture images and collect genetic material. ?? Special cameras in light boxes took photos of over 250,000 insects, helping scientists identify and catalogue them quickly in real-time. ?? Advanced ‘NatureNode’ sound sensors tracked bird activity in the treetops by recognising and analysing their calls, even in the hard-to-reach areas. ?? Mapped and identified thousands of tree species using a powerful canopy-mapping tool to study the forest's intricate structure. ?? Drones collected water samples from remote streams, filtering 45 litres of water to extract traces of e-DNA left by animals and plants. ?? Analysed over 27 million fragments of genetic material, all processed in an innovative pop-up field lab within 48 hours! This remarkable project highlights the power of NatureTech to revolutionise biodiversity monitoring, conservation and the power of collective action. Thursday, 5:30PM Weston Gallery! Joe Marianek is a designer, creative director, and educator. He is partner at Small Stuff, a design studio based in New York City. Prior to co-founding Small Stuff, Joe held design leadership positions at Apple and Pentagram. He is a president emeritus of AIGA, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, New York Chapter. He has served as an adjunct faculty at the School of Visual Arts, and the Rhode Island School of Design, where he is an alumni. He currently teaches thesis at Parsons School of Design. Marianek’s work has been recognized by the AIGA, the Art Directors Club, the Type Directors Club, D&AD, 50 Books / 50 Covers, and others. He received the Print?“20 Under 30” award, and was named a “Young Gun” by the Art Directors Club. His recent collaboration with the Equal Justice Initiative on the National Memorial for Peace and Justice received the highest honors from the SEGD.
