Becoming a doctor wasn't always Jay Bergquist's goal. He started his professional life as a marine engineer and naval architect in the military but soon found more connection in medicine. As a hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeon, he can still work with his hands while serving his community. Dr. Bergquist tells his story in our "How I Got Here" series.

A major fixture at Hillcrest Medical Center is leaving us this week. Dee, RN, in surgical services, is retiring after 46 years! She started as a neurology nurse in 1978. Since then, she's worked in IV therapy, chemotherapy and labor and delivery. For the last 23 years, she's worked in surgical services, helping people prepare for and recover from surgeries large and small. After four decades, we asked her what advice she would give the next generation of nurses. She said it's all about adaptability and learning. "One of my big mottos is life is about change. Nothing ever stays the same. If you don't stay up with the times, you get left behind," said Dee. "We nurses, when we get out of nursing school, we think we know so much. But believe it or not, it's only the tip of an iceberg... You're going to learn from your physicians, you're going to learn from your coworkers. That's what makes us great nurses." Dee's hands have undoubtedly helped thousands of people! Now, Dee says she's planning a trip to Italy to celebrate her retirement. It's well deserved! Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI) is proud to be the first program in the state to earn Gold Level ELSO Award of Excellence in life support! Some of our extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) team members recently flew to Detroit to the 35th Annual Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) conference to accept the award. The ELSO Award of Excellence recognizes extracorporeal life support programs around the world that distinguish themselves by having processes, procedures and systems in place to promote excellence and exceptional ECMO care. We love serving our community and we're proud to provide this award-winning care and service to our patients.

A huge congratulations to Hillcrest's business relations director Carolina Morris, who was recognized this week as one of 10 outstanding women by the League of Women Voters of Tulsa! The women selected for this honor are change-makers, advocates and leaders in Tulsa. Carolina was chosen for her dedication to using her platform to be a role model and provide opportunities for youth through health care career exposure. She serves on the board for Youth Medical Mentorship, dedicated to recruiting, mentoring, and retaining a talented and diverse workforce to pursue careers in the medical field. Carolina also serves on the Oklahoma Aquarium Foundation, a non-profit that focuses on providing field trips to underserved communities. Congratulations to Carolina and the other honorees for their pioneering work!

We're thrilled to welcome Laura Hennum, the new CEO at Hillcrest South! Laura recently moved to Tulsa from Oregon, where she served as CEO of Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis. She has also worked at health systems in Nevada and California. Laura brings decades of executive leadership experience that we are fortunate to have at our facility.
