What a day at Sundance Mountain Resort! The Hillcrest Mid-Market Growth Summit brought together our business community for a great collection of speakers, content, and networking opportunities that embodied Utah’s unique business landscape. Even with a bigger venue, we packed the lodge. Huge thanks to our partners, panelists, and the team at Sundance for making it a success — Eide Bailly LLP, Parsons Behle & Latimer, IMA Financial Group, Inc., Colliers (Galanis, Yates, Knapp), and Stio?.

Here is a common example of a fraud attack on non-profits to help reduce your risk this giving season. Scenario: Once a donation by check is made, a bad actor may claim they accidentally made the donation for more than intended and request a refund of the difference via a wire or digital payment. It is highly likely the original check is counterfeit. How to protect yourself: Be aware this may be a fraud attempt. Do not return any funds until sufficient time (at least seven days) has passed to ensure the check is not returned. Look at the check and the request, is the check from someone different than the person requesting the return of excess funds? Is the address for the wire different than the address on the check? If you are still unsure, contact your banker before sending any funds back.
