  • Join us on Wednesday, March 26 at 11 a.m. (CT) for “Armenian Christian Martyrs in Text and Image,” a free, virtual event with special guest Dr. Ani Shahinian: hmml.org/events Dr. Shahinian is a cataloger of Armenian manuscripts at HMML, where she works with a wide range of Armenian manuscripts in collections across the Middle East and Asia. Outside of HMML, Dr. Shahinian’s research has looked at Christian martyrdom in the context of political, economic, and ecclesiastical history in Late Medieval Armenia and, more broadly, she has addressed questions of what it means to be human in a technological age, focusing on virtue-ethics and the freedom of the human will. In the lecture, Dr. Shahinian will share artifacts from manuscript illuminations, material culture, and texts that broaden access to the history, memory, and experience of martyrdom in Armenia and beyond. She will explore the role of martyrdom in shaping Christian identity, particularly, Armenian Christianity, and the development of the Universal Church in Armenia. Q&A to follow! HMML’s Winter Lecture Series features scholars who study cultures, histories, languages, and traditions around the world through the fascinating medium of manuscripts.
