    Translating the idea of inclusion and belonging into action is one of the biggest hurdles I see for leaders. I’m always saying that inclusion is an action—it’s a verb, things you do. Yet so many leaders get stuck after unconscious bias training and understanding microaggressions. It’s almost like the emotional capacity and regulation skills needed to actually be inclusive are missing.?? It’s ironic, but it’s like they’re only seeing the world in black and white, trying to figure out how to bring nuance to something they’ve been taught is straightforward. And it’s been frustrating as a practitioner. How do you teach someone to handle the nuanced interpersonal skills of DEI work when they’re still looking at it as a task to check off? This challenge is exactly what inspired me to create a new assessment tool for a client. It looks at the defense mechanisms and behavior patterns that block inclusion and offers a simple ‘if this, then that’ logic to help leaders start practicing inclusive behaviors. No complex theories—just clear inputs and outputs. The goal? With enough reps, inclusion becomes muscle memory. I may not be able to tell you what to say, word for word, to every microaggression or act of exclusion, but I can help you recognize when behaviors aren’t working and show you what to try instead. #Leadership #Belonging

    ? Lightbulb Moments ? As a coach and instructional designer, this is what I live for: those moments when a client suddenly sees, with clarity, the thought or belief that’s been quietly holding them back. It’s like watching them step out of their own shadow to bask in a light they’ve had all along. It’s like realizing the air you breath is tainted and stale, and then breathing clean mountain air for the first time. These breakthroughs don’t come from outside validation; they come from within. They’re about courageously looking inside, letting go of beliefs that no longer serve, exposing them for what they are and imagining a future that is different and creative and new.     Practice Makes Practice Ever felt held back by perfectionism, people-pleasing, or that relentless drive to “do more”? Here’s a funny thought: on LinkedIn, you can deck out your profile with every credential imaginable—your MS, JD, PhD, PMP, and a whole alphabet of acronyms after your name. When I see that, I’m always a little curious… who is all of that for? And what does it mean if that’s the first thing you want people to know about you? Do you ever feel that way? Just one more thing—another degree, certification, job, accolade—because free time makes you squirmy? When did being still become unproductive? Why are we so afraid not to produce? You’re not alone. Our (work) culture is filled with messages that tell us our worth is tied to our output. “More” means you’re worth more. More education, more experience… but here’s the thing: your outputs don’t define your worth. You’re not GPT; you’re a human being - worthy even when you mess up the prompt (especially then). You have nothing to prove to anyone. In my new beta program, Dreamer’s Canvas, we’re diving into this exact conversation.     “Perfect” Wasn’t Enough In 2016, after building my company’s first L&D department, earning a perfect 5/5 review, and being praised by leadership, I faced a harsh reality. Under a new manager—who happened to be a white woman—my performance was suddenly questioned. Typos were “unacceptable.” Meetings were “ministerial.” And within six weeks, my team was disbanded, and I had no decision-making authority. I left with trauma, yes. But I also left with the lesson that even “perfect” isn’t enough in certain environments. And the more I coached BIPOC women in the years that followed, the more I realized: my experience wasn’t unique. Many of us have faced toxic cultures that push perfectionism, urgency, intellect-over-emotion, and hustle as virtues. When we leave those environments, though, that toxicity often sticks. It’s a residue I call the “detox period,” and without that conscious detox, we end up recreating those dynamics in new roles, sometimes even in businesses we build ourselves. (Corporate) America is full of spaces like this. Heck you could be the top in your field, the second in command to the highest office, have a breakthrough fundraising campaign, and still . . . not get the job. Some spaces are toxic by design. And it’s soooo familiar, old, and unimaginative. That’s why I’m inviting folks into something new: Dreamer’s Canvas. It’s a 4-session 1:1 coaching program (in beta) for those ready to shed limiting beliefs like perfectionism and grind culture and embrace a more liberated vision for 2025. Rooted in a Black feminist lens, Dreamer’s Canvas is about reclaiming our dreams and moving forward with intention and clarity.
