Coalition on Accessibility in Higher Education

高等教育

The coalition seeks to make connections between research, policy, & practice to transform higher education.

关于我们

Despite more than 21 percent of undergraduate college students having a disability, only about 18 percent of these students over 25 have a bachelor’s degree (half the rate of adults without a disability). Accessibility in higher education is a significant and persistent issue. Barriers toward an accessible higher education experience include placing the burden of proof and access on learners, a lack of system-wide supports, a lack of belonging and inclusion, and data collection gaps. We at the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) and the Center for Higher Education Policy and Practice (CHEPP) at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) are excited to be joining forces and working together to launch a coalition, building upon a 2024 cross-sector convening, to address the persistent and pervasive inaccessibility in higher education. The coalition will bring together: a) disability policy experts and advocates, b) higher education practitioners, c) workforce experts and advocates, d) policy leaders, e) legal experts, f) educators, and g) college students and those with lived experience. The vision of the coalition is to make connections between research, policy, and practice to transform institutions of higher education and expand accessible, multi-modal learning opportunities such as in person, online, and a combination of both, to truly enable each learner to achieve economic security, economic mobility, and success in life.
