Today is National Medal of Honor Day, a federal observance commemorating the bravery and sacrifices of the more than 3,500 Medal of Honor recipients. In 2023, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center dedicated its newest supercomputer in honor of Mississippi native and the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient, U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Kyle Carpenter. While serving in Afghanistan, Kyle and a fellow Marine were manning a rooftop security position when they were attacked by hand grenades. Kyle fearlessly moved toward the grenade and shielded his friend from the deadly blast — he survived the attack saving the life of his fellow Marine. Of ERDC’s supercomputers, two others are named for Medal of Honor recipients, Lance Cpl. Roy Wheat and Capt. Ed Freeman, in recognition of their service, bravery and sacrifice. These machines enhance the ability our engineers and scientists to support the Department of Defense’s most demanding computational challenges.
