Today is National Medal of Honor Day, a federal observance commemorating the bravery and sacrifices of the more than 3,500 Medal of Honor recipients. In 2023, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center dedicated its newest supercomputer in honor of Mississippi native and the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient, U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Kyle Carpenter. While serving in Afghanistan, Kyle and a fellow Marine were manning a rooftop security position when they were attacked by hand grenades. Kyle fearlessly moved toward the grenade and shielded his friend from the deadly blast — he survived the attack saving the life of his fellow Marine. Of ERDC’s supercomputers, two others are named for Medal of Honor recipients, Lance Cpl. Roy Wheat and Capt. Ed Freeman, in recognition of their service, bravery and sacrifice. These machines enhance the ability our engineers and scientists to support the Department of Defense’s most demanding computational challenges. Time to put your thinking caps ?? on: HELIOS models the coupled aerodynamic and structural dynamics response of the vehicle using computational fluid dynamics codes for aerodynamics, computational structural dynamics to model structural bending and trim software with multi-body dynamics to set the controls to achieve vehicle trim. Simply put? HELIOS software code makes accurate aeromechanics predictions of rotorcraft performance under a variety of flight conditions. Kelly Dalton has been named director of HPCMP effective January 26, 2025. In this role, Dalton will lead our efforts to provide DOD scientists and engineers the computational resources they need to develop robust solutions to technical challenges while minimizing cost, time, and risk. This includes leadership of our five Defense Supercomputing Resource Centers (DSRCs), operations of the Defense Research and Engineering Network, and software and training programs. Dalton currently serves as Technical Director of the Air Force DSRC located at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio. Congratulations, Kelly! #hpc #supercomputing #defense #leadership

Today at #SC24, HPCMP will be creating connections through our Birds of a Feather (BOF) event, “Engaging with the DOD HPCMP”, from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in room B209. We will share updates from program leadership, recent successes, technology acquisition plans, and software development efforts.
