Nate Pietrini, Ed.D., executive director of High Jump, has been appointed by Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias to the Board of Directors of the Illinois Literacy Foundation (ILF). Serving on this board, Nate will promote literacy awareness and support literacy programs throughout the state to benefit all Illinois residents. Literacy is foundational to every measure of personal and community well-being – health, safety, economic development, and civic engagement. illinoisliteracy.org/ Regarding the appointment, Nate shared, "Literacy should be a human right. You can't access a healthy life and economic opportunity if you are not a skillful reader. Become a High Jump Scholar! High Jump Scholars is a holistic learning program designed to help learners develop the skills they need to thrive wherever they go. The program consists of six weeks of daily instruction in the summer and an average of two Saturdays each month during the school year. Our curriculum exposes students to culturally relevant literature, themes, rigorous math instruction, and experiential learning. Students will join us onsite at one of our three campuses in Chicago: the Latin School of Chicago, the Francis W. Parker School, and the University of Chicago Laboratory School. In our humanities classes, scholars have the opportunity to read culturally relevant literature, improve their critical reading and writing skills, and reflect on their personal narratives. Middle school years are among the most crucial for identity development when students begin to form a sense of self, a sense of their unique place in the world, and an idea of their short- and long-term goals.
