Congratulations to our CEO Bouzha Cookman! Underscore VC recognized her at their 2024 #CoreSummit with a #CoreAward for her work "supporting and developing CEOs and CEO communities." Thank you Underscore!
At last night's #CoreSummit, we honored ten Core Members who have gone above in beyond in their support of the startup ecosystem, the Core Community, and Underscore as a firm. Maria Loughlin & Marty Loughlin - You've introduced us to the most incredible founders and we're so grateful for your partnership. Thank you for being master sourcers! Bouzha Cookman - You've stood out as such an impactful supporter and developer of CEOs and CEO communities. Thanks for living a value we care deeply about: "it takes a community." Matt Crane - Thank you for being an all-star ecosystem champion to not just Underscore, but the Boston tech ecosystem. It's been exciting to follow along with the community you're curating and the lessons you're sharing from Boston tech companies. Andrew Lau - Thank you for helping out with countless investment opportunities and digging into diligence with us to get to a good decision. You've got great judgment and we are always excited to get your perspective. Peter Zotto - Thank you for always being open to taking an introduction to a founder and spending time with them on pricing & packaging. Your work with our portfolio companies has been instrumental. Molly Fowler - Your insight, collaboration, and dedication to the campus startup and venture ecosystem is inspiring. We’re incredibly proud backers of Dorm Room Fund, and you. Brian Zitin - We are very grateful that you frequently introduce interesting founders to us in the ecosystem. You've been a great partner across many aspects of our venture business and the broader community. Julia Austin - Thank you for your great work to support the entrepreneurial journeys on Harvard’s campus. We appreciate your efforts to build bridges with founders on campus and the venture community. We also want to recognize the work you do to support great female founders - something we care passionately about. Rob Hickey- You've been a standout advisor to Underscore portfolio companies, and you've been such a champion of the Community model. Thank you for the wonderful introductions, and thoughtful diligence feedback on companies. This year we also created a new award in our Co-founder and Partner John Pearce's honor. The Pearce Award is given to an individual who serves founders with the spirit of John, who shared his endless wisdom with humility and grace, and cared for a founder's overall well-being, not just their business results. We are honored to give the first-ever Pearce Award to Jeffrey Barnett who embodies this award. Jeff goes above and beyond, digging in with us and our entrepreneurs, and taking the community to new heights. Thank you for all that you’ve done and continue to do.?

It was wonderful to experience our High-Growth CEO community coming together - alums catching up with each other, forum members connecting across forums, interested tech CEOs meeting some of the amazing people we are fortunate enough to call our community members!?Thanks to all who came and a special shout out to our topical roundtable leaders – Tod Loofbourrow, Greg Segall, Heather Tenuto and Andrew Lau! A few of the key takeaways from roundtable working sessions include: ?? AI – How Are You Making it a Competitive Edge? ?? It's the combo of an #AI proprietary data moat plus applied AI knowing your customer to make the customer experience better that produces the winners. To build a great AI company, you have to build a great data company first. Use many techniques to build the database--buy, trade, scrape it, build it, barter etc. Also look for key linkages across different but connected datasets to add even more value. AI will enable not only more and better USERS of information with better interfaces (ie speak to the app) but also enable a whole new swath of people to be content CREATORS/CONTRIBUTORS who previously didn't have the skill to do so. ?? Go-to Market – Overcoming Challenges & Sharing Best Practices ?? Sales cycles have become fragmented and involve too many disconnected activities channels: 3rd party lead gen, social media, SEO, other outreach, webinars, etc. Sales people have lost the art of building credible, authentic relationships and driving sales personally from lead gen to close. Need more experienced sales people to do this. Third party sites like Trustpilot, G2 and Capterra are more successful than a landing page exclaiming how great the product is. Get good reviews on these and post on site or steer leads to a 3rd party site to read reviews. Paid search can work but needs to be creative and very focused on LinkedIn, BDRs aren't worth it, they have very low performance. SEO efficacy is questionable, too much effort is required to optimize articles all the time. Conversion to customers is low, use more organic content - go after specific needs with customer vs. ad words. Use a multi-pronged contact approach to reach out to customers from multiple directions. ?? We are growing High-Growth CEO!? Where else can you get 30+ CEOs of high-growth ventures in a room to talk about how they are using AI, fundraising, and best practices around GTM/sales. It was an amazing opportunity to connect with the best and brightest.
