Last week, I attended the Clio Cloud Conference (aka #ClioCon). A massive thank you to Patrick Patino and High Five Legal, A Patino Law Office Bankruptcy Service for making this happen. ?? The conference was a deep dive into the future of legal tech, and — unsurprisingly — generative legal AI came up every 7 seconds. My research with the Mitchell Hamline: The Center for Law and Business focused not only on the "cool factor" of AI but on practical strategies to integrate it into a law firm’s business model . . . and break that business model if required. Clio’s expanded research really stood out, with some eye-opening stats: 1?? 75% of hourly billable tasks in law firms could be automated with AI. 2?? Without billing adjustments, AI could reduce individual lawyer revenue by $27,000 annually. 3?? 71% of clients want to pay flat fees for entire cases, yet only 50% of firms offer this option. This aligns perfectly with what drew me to High Five Legal’s focus on flat fee offerings, which offers predictability to clients already dealing with so much uncertainty. I'm excited to explore how we can further automate processes and streamline offerings to reduce unit costs for the benefit of borrowers. ?? Yes, you can get rid of SBA loans in a bankruptcy. Just because the SBA is a part of the government, doesn't mean that the SBA loan is non-dischargeable (bankruptcy attorney talk for "it survives the bankruptcy untouched"). This is a common misconception that keeps many small business owners from seeking the protection and fresh start of a personal bankruptcy to deal with the personal guarantees on those SBA loans (including EIDL COVID Relief Loans). #bankruptcy

I didn't go to law school thinking I was going to be a bankruptcy attorney. I was a transfer student at University of Illinois College of Law, meaning there were slim pickings of what courses were available. My buddy Colin Willmott was like, "let's take a four-hour bankruptcy course." I signed up and loved it (shoutout to Pamela Foohey). Something clicked. I enjoyed reading the bankruptcy code. I went on to take bankruptcy procedure (shoutout Ralph Brubaker) and complete an independent study on small business bankruptcies in Nebraska. I decided to pursue a career as a bankruptcy attorney because I enjoyed helping everyday people and bankruptcy law clicked for me. As I finish 10 full years of bankruptcy practice, I have been reflecting on my journey. In many ways it has been full of twists and turns, but one thing has remained consistent, my love of helping everyday people. Now that I operate a firm (High Five Legal, A Patino Law Office Bankruptcy Service) in two states, Minnesota and Nebraska, I am able to assist more everyday people. And that is what makes my heart feel full.
