In the Desertarium, you’ll learn about creatures including burrowing owls and Western pond turtles. Visit the Autzen Otter Exhibit, where you’ll giggle at the playful antics of three North American river otters. See eagles and owls up close in the Donald M. Kerr Birds of Prey Center, and learn about them during daily Bird of Prey Encounters. In the summer, experience the speed and power of nature’s most spectacular predators during the daily Raptors of the Desert Sky free-flight program. Step back in time and connect to the region’s past to present as you wander through dynamic, permanent exhibits such as "By Hand Through Memory," which shares the culture of Plateau tribes, and Spirit of the West. New exhibition alert… opening Saturday, February 1! “Frank S. Matsura: Portraits from the Borderland” comes to us from the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture in Spokane, Washington. The exhibition includes 22 large-scale photographs by Japanese-born Matsura (1873-1913) — a lesser known but important figure in the history of Native portrait photography — of the Indigenous peoples of Okanogan County along the U.S.-Canadian border in Washington. Matsura’s work hearkens back to a period of enormous regional transformation in the early 20th century. His photos will be paired with exquisite, period-specific cultural items — gloves, beaded cornhusk bags and leggings. A compelling contemporary video by filmmaker and storyteller LaRonn Katchia (Warm Springs, Wasco, Paiute) will showcase the continuum of Indigenous cultures and traditions to the present day. Mark your calendars! The exhibition is possible with support from Art Bridges Foundation and is organized by the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture. IMAGE: The Wapato Smithins family posed for Frank S. Matsura’s camera sometime between 1903-1913. Frank S. Matsura, enlarged pigment print from gelatin dry plate scan, 33 x 46 in.
