"We can't forget that for many people, becoming a caregiver is disruptive, and they may be thrust into the role unexpectedly." The #caregiving crisis requires employers to work together with the government to support those juggling caregiving responsibilities, or else the economy will suffer from #caregivers needing to fully exit the workforce. As this Employee Benefit News article states plainly, the risk is too high:

A new scoping study confirms what Cleo's member data also shows: Caregivers of loved ones undergoing cancer treatment experience a major toll on their mental health. According to the review, more than 15% of those who care for loved ones with cancer suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). "Caregivers remain largely overlooked in psychosocial oncology care, leaving many without the support they need," says lead author Elizaveta (Lisa) Klekovkina, a social worker in the Department of Supportive Care at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre." #cancercare #cancercaregiving #caregiving Read more:

What, exactly, makes a benefit innovative? On the heels of being named a Fast Company Most Innovative Company for the third year in a row, we've had lots of conversation about what specifically we consider innovative in the world of family health. Here's a handy checklist for your family benefit consideration: ? Is your benefit global, serving all of your employees or members no matter where they're located, their cultural background, or what language they speak? ? Is your benefit holistic, treating the whole person and taking their whole family’s health into account? ? Is your benefit proactive, actively working to prevent burnout rather than simply responding to issues as they arise? ? Is your benefit thorough, following up with members and ensuring that the resources providing are working? Learn more in the linked post ?? #FCMostInnovative

Ready for a wild stat? The number of family caregivers supporting older adults living in home and residential-care settings increased 32%, from 18.2 million to 24.1 million, between 2011 and 2022. This is according to a new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. This is a major increase, and unfortunately the data shows that those numbers will only grow. As Newswise put it, #caregiving responsibilities continue to fall primarily to women and some subgroups at greater risk for negative consequences —including caregivers to persons with dementia and those who have limited financial resources. With the population of adults age 85 and older projected to triple by 2050, researchers say there is an urgent need to address disparities in caregiver experiences. We know facts like these can feel overwhelming. That's why Cleo quantitatively measures caregiver health to ensure we can both find those most at risk of negative consequences and provide them with care before the real issues (and costs) begin. If you haven't yet put a plan in place to support family caregivers in your workforce, today's a great time to start.

So excited for the partnership with Cleo to provide improved caregiver support and comprehensive care coordination for our ever-expanding Sonder Health membership. This is just one of the many steps Sonder is implementing under the guidance of our CEO Suzanna Roberts in trying to put the "CARE" back in "HEALTHCARE." Very excited to work with Madhavi Vemireddy, MD and Cleo. And thanks to Marissa Plescia for an outstanding interview & article.
We're thrilled to be providing family caregiving support, care coordination, and support in achieving Stars measures and health outcomes for Sonder Health Plans' Medicare Advantage members! Cleo's proactive care model — particularly focused on expertise in eldercare issues such as chronic condition management, Alzheimer's disease and dementia care, and end-of-life care — is a natural fit for the #MedicareAdvantage market. So, what does Cleo do for Medicare Advantage members? We do the same thing we do for all Cleo members: We proactively identify risk factors related to physical and emotional wellbeing, social wellbeing, and health-related social factors to mitigate and in many cases prevent their effects. The result is a happier and healthier member base — and better outcomes for amazing customers like Sonder Health.
