According to the EPA, Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is used to describe situations in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified. All mechanical systems fall out of alignment and as a result, stop performing at peak efficiency, and more importantly can lead to poor indoor air quality. The EPA states that inadequate ventilation as one of the primary contributing factors for SBS and Building Related Illness (BRI). It is recommended that HVAC systems are rebalanced every 3-5 years. The cost of rebalancing a mechanical system is negligible compared to the cost of increased energy consumption and the poor air quality you can expect from an unbalanced system. When you consider the cost of chronic absenteeism due to SBS or BRI, the old saying that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" has never been more applicable.
