A mission-driven film studio. We inspire wonder, curiosity, and hope through stories about science.
关于我们
HHMI Tangled Bank Studios is a mission-driven production company crafting award-winning films that use science as a lens for making sense of our world. A vision of biologist and author Sean B. Carroll, HHMI Tangled Bank Studios is uniquely positioned to shine a light on some of the most significant scientific challenges and breakthroughs of our time. That’s in part because of our affiliation with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (hence the “HHMI” in our name), the largest private, nonprofit funder of science-education activities in the U.S.

Last weekend, the Tangled Bank Studios team and superstar scientist Patrick Brown attended the National Association of Biology Teachers Conference in Anaheim for a final sneak peek screening of Wild Hope: Mission Impossible! To kick things off, Jared Lipworth hosted trivia for an audience of several hundred biology teachers, asking science questions about beef and plant-based meat. Following the screening, Dr. Patrick Brown and his former student at Stanford Kirstin Milks, PhD hosted an engaging Q&A session with the audience. Thank you NABT for hosting such an engaging event and to all of the biology teachers who participated. Wild Hope: Mission Impossible is out now on YouTube! We are honored that our film, “Wilding,” based on Isabella Tree’s novel by the same name, is featured in the November issue of National Geographic Magazine. Isabella Tree, a pioneer in the rewilding movement, penned a fascinating article about rewilding efforts across Europe that is well worth a read. “In just over 20 years, our depleted land has become a haven for some of the U.K.’s rarest species, including nightingales, turtle doves, and purple emperor butterflies, and draws thousands of tourists annually. I told our story in the book Wilding, now a documentary film, and Charlie, having helped establish the nonprofit Rewilding Britain, joined the board of Rewilding Europe.”- Isabella Tree Thank you to Knepp Estate for allowing us to amplify this story and to our production partner PASSION PICTURES for helping us bring “Wilding” to life. We are honored that our film “The Battle to Beat Malaria” has won the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Gold Award in the Video In-Depth Reporting category. Filmmakers Catherine Gale, Archie Baron, Sean B. Carroll, Jared Lipworth, Catherine Houlihan, and Alex Keefe collaborated on the film, which brings viewers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the University of Oxford research team that spearheaded the new R21 vaccine — being hailed as a major breakthrough in the fight against malaria — and its long path from development to approval by the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) in October 2023. “This is an important story about a scientific breakthrough that’s going to save millions of lives,” said Executive Producer and Head of HHMI Tangled Bank Studios Jared Lipworth. “To be able to showcase the process of scientific discovery as it happens — and to be recognized by AAAS for that feat — is a true honor.” Congratulations to our production partners NOVA | PBS and WINGSPAN PRODUCTIONS LTD with whom we share this great honor.
