Feeling and expressing gratitude is not always easy; especially when you are experiencing elevated levels of stress, disappointment, anxiety, and feeling unseen. However, it is in these very times that deploying gratitude may help you the most. Research particularly in the field of positive psychology has reported correlations between gratitude, improved mental health and wellbeing. Hence gratitude can foster resilience, nurture a sense of belonging, and promote individual self-care, family, and community care. Thanksgiving is a perfect time to incorporate gratitude practices as the holiday season begins, our resources of time, finances, and patience can become strained. Below is a key point excerpt from How to Practice Gratitude the Right Way by Dr. Kelly-Ann Allen in Psychology Today: - Gratitude can improve mental health and well-being. - Broad gratitude practices reduce stress more than specific ones. - Simple practices like journaling or thanking others can boost well-being. - Forced gratitude can be harmful in certain situations. All the points above are vital in cultivating a gratitude practice but pay close attention to the fourth point on “forced gratitude”. Gratitude, like any other practice, takes time to develop. Current and past traumas often require more time to heal. One should never feel obligated to be grateful for things that hurt.
