The 2025 Heurich Urban Manufacturing Incubator opportunities are here! Check out what's new, what's returning, and our hopes for 2025. New This Year: ?? Maker Bill of Rights: How we Work with Makers ?? Pilot Maker Fellowship (Applications Open) Returning This Year: ?Teach a Maker-Led Workshop (Applications Open) ?Monthly Mini Markts (Applications Open) ?Christmas Markt (Stay Tuned for Applications) Makers need a community committed to their growth. Over the last few years, we've seen the artisan maker industry explode; many artisans are running businesses they started at home during the pandemic, while others are looking for freedom from a traditional work schedule, and others are using their passion to generate extra income as inflation rates grew. As such those looking to support makers expanded their programs & events. With growth comes opportunity – and also predatory practices. In response to the lessons the museum has learned through its own actions, as well as the examples (good and bad) that we have seen in the marketplace, we are proud to publish a "Maker Bill of Rights," which outlines how we will work with makers in all of our programming. By publishing this document, the museum hopes to build trust with the makers we work with and to inspire others who work with makers to take ethical approaches to their maker partnerships.
关于我们
The Heurich House Museum’s mission is to explore the American Experience through the legacy of German immigrant Christian Heurich and his Washington, DC brewery, and to create a just path to success for local small-scale manufacturers. The museum works to reinvent the traditional historic house museum model by bridging Heurich’s world with modern DC. We explore the city’s unique history and connect it to today’s local small businesses, artisans, and craft beer makers through innovative programming that cannot be found anywhere else in the community. Our dual mission of public history education and public service relates directly to our core philosophy: that house museums should be dynamic places that are relevant to our modern communities. For many years, Heurich’s story was the museum’s focal point, with other voices left out of the narrative. Our mission today: (1) expands our historic interpretation to include people whose voices had been muted, and (2) extends the service we provide our community by giving business support to modern small-scale manufacturers.

Seven years ago, I was asked to give a short, "subversive" talk at a little old place called the Heurich House Museum. I knew exactly who I wanted to talk about: the woman who made DC's iconic cityscape possible, Harlean James. Now, her dazzling, untold story is one of the core threads of my forthcoming book, and I am pleased present it with much more detail at the museum on September 12th.

Come hear our humanities scholar-in-residence, Neil Flanagan, speak about his research on Harlean James, one of the most influential figures you’ve never heard of.

Preservation Magazine just published a beautiful story about the Heurich House Museum, and I'm grateful that they included this quote from our long discussion: "My vision is for us to be an important local history organization and to...be a leader in the strengthening of the value of local history." https://lnkd.in/dR8TiF9B
