Herron Classical Schools

Last week 18 of our Principles of Teaching scholars got the opportunity to attend Education Next Indy, an initiative co-sponsored by Marian University Indianapolis and The Mind Trust to help support local high school students working towards the field of education as a career choice. Did you know that Herron Classical Schools is investing in future educators? High School students can take a Dual Credit Principles of Teaching course where they are exposed to the education career field and begin to learn the skills of teaching. The future of education is bright!!

Congratulations to our Herron High School athletics department for being awarded the 2023-24 IHSAA Sportsmanship Award! HHS Athletic Director Matt George shared, "This award is a testament to the emphasis our coaches, student-athletes, and parents place on practicing good sportsmanship at each and every athletic event. I'm extremely proud of our school and look forward to our department accomplishing more great things together." To meet the award criteria, our school had to: ? Implement an athletic council ? Acknowledge the merits of servant leadership through community service ? Implement an education program for coaching staff and parents ? Maintain at least 100 'sportsmanship points' all year (points are accrued throughout the year based on athletics performance, community involvement, and more - we finished with 122!) Congratulations to Matt George and all of our scholar athletes!

Argonauts Alivia Bond and Azriel Hargro both presented at the Indiana CTSI Summer Research Program Poster Symposium this week and were accepted into Project SEED. The SEED program provides summer experience for students from all backgrounds who want to explore a career in any of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. These high school students commit to 8 weeks of scientific research for the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. Way to go Alivia and Azriel! ??

?????? ?? Reflecting on an incredible STEM trip to Japan! Our high school scholars not only delved into Japan's technology and innovation but also immersed themselves in the rich tapestry of Japanese culture. By experiencing new perspectives and embracing a new culture, they gained a holistic education that goes beyond textbooks. Here's to the power of blending science and global exploration in shaping well-rounded, future-ready leaders!

???? The adventure of a lifetime! Our high schoolers immersed themselves in South Africa's vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife. ???? While this country's spotted and striped inhabitants are beautiful, it's the social, political, and cultural lessons of South Africa that our scholars will carry with them forever.

Please join us in celebrating and welcoming Ms. Brela Akers to the Herron-Riverside High School family! As a college preparatory, classical liberal arts and sciences high school, our mission is to prepare students to be well-rounded citizens for the 21st century. Important to that mission is ensuring students have access to high-quality tools to prepare them for college and beyond. This year, we are excited to announce the launch of a robust College and Careers coaching program in partnership with Christel House International, an education non-profit. Through this partnership, students will have access to our very own college and career coach - Ms. Akers! Ms. Akers joins the Herron-Riverside family with years of experience supporting scholars in the city to achieve their goals in college and beyond. When reflecting about the new role, she shares, "I'm very excited to work alongside students and families to understand their future." As a part of her role, Ms. Akers will be responsible for connecting students to different college and career pathways. This ranges from traditional college visits to 21st century industry tours and job shadowing opportunities. What's more, students will layer in important life skills through college and career modules during Advisory. A sample of these modules include: ? Financial literacy ? Transitions to post-secondary education ? Mentorships ? Confidence building ? Employability soft / hard skills And perhaps the best part of this partnership is that Ms. Akers and her team of college and career colleagues will stay in touch and lead programming with our students even after they graduate to help navigate life after high school. Herron-Riverside alumni will continue to be supported by this unique coaching program!

?????? From breathtaking landscapes to rich culture, our high schoolers had a BLAST exploring Ireland and England this summer with Mrs. Beachum!

?? Celebrating the generosity of our community partners! ?? A big thank you to the Penrod Society for their grant award in support of our Design Week camp at HRHS. They have given to our network consistently over the years in support of our arts initiatives, and we're so grateful for their support of Herron Classical Schools! The Penrod Society, (sponsor of the annual Penrod Arts Fair) "focuses on the cultivation, encouragement and development of public interest in and support of those arts, cultural and educational institutions located in and around Marion County, Indiana, its surrounding counties and the Indiana area in general."
