Cyber threats are constantly evolving, and I want to take a moment each week or so to highlight a new or reemerging cybersecurity threat that you should be aware of. This week, I’m spotlighting two scams that have been making the rounds again: 1. Fake CAPTCHA Scam CAPTCHA, which stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart,” is a security feature designed to prevent automated bots from accessing websites. However, attackers are now using fake CAPTCHA pages as part of phishing campaigns. Victims receive an email prompting them to review a document or security alert, leading them to a fraudulent CAPTCHA page. Once users engage with the fake CAPTCHA, they are redirected to a phishing site designed to steal login credentials. These attacks can be convincing, as users associate CAPTCHA with security. To protect yourself: ? Always verify the sender of any unexpected emails requesting login actions. ? Check the URL of the CAPTCHA page before entering any credentials. ? Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to add an extra layer of security. For more details, AT&T has a short blog post on this scam: Fake CAPTCHA Scam: https://lnkd.in/dUJ6Kn8F 2. Toll Payment Smishing Scam SMS phishing, or “smishing,” scams have resurfaced, this time posing as unpaid toll notifications. Attackers send fraudulent text messages claiming the recipient has an unpaid toll and must click a link to make a payment or risk fines, late fees, or even license suspension. These scams often look official and are designed to create a sense of urgency. However, clicking the link can lead to credential theft or fraudulent payment processing. To stay safe: ?? Do not click on links in unsolicited text messages about unpaid tolls. ?? If you receive such a message, verify directly with your state’s toll agency by visiting their official website. ?? Report suspicious messages to your mobile carrier by forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM).
