Fun interview with my friend Nick Soman.
?? "We built Hero Health to reward high-quality, low-cost care." — Patrick Long is reimagining health plans. In this week’s Decent Healthcare Rebel Alliance series, I had the honor of chatting with Patrick Long from Hero Health Plans. His work helps to make sure providers with better outcomes get more business, pushing the envelope on what’s possible in healthcare. ?? Favorite Quote: "The best part of my job? It doesn’t feel like work." Check out the full interview in the comments! ??

ICYMI… The Wall Street Journal continued their coverage of the corrupt PBM companies. Perhaps the most surprising fact- it took 32 months for the Committee to complete its investigation. Those of us in the business could have wrapped this up in 32 days- or less. You gotta love it when the CEO of Express Scripts and Optum claim they are transparent while moving their buying group operations to Switzerland and Ireland to (… wait for it) avoid transparency. “There’s a credibility issue…” Chairman Comer (R-KY) deadpanned. To our #NC friends, do you think the health systems are helping our communities by blocking local doctors from establishing clinics? *States without #CON Laws have far more locally-owned care facilities.
Co-President, Aventria and QC-Health. Host of Relentless Health Value - award-winning podcast about healthcare value.
Unintended consequences is a thing. ERCowboy wrote on Twitter a while back, “In any complex system, the likelihood of unintended consequences vastly outweighs the predictability of intended ones.” In this healthcare podcast, we’re talking about two state laws where this is apropos: CON (Certificates of Need) laws and then COPA (Certificates of Public Advantage). Turns out, states actually have pretty much power to impact the competitive landscape in their state. They have a lot of levers they can pull. States really can make a difference in terms of improving real competition on value and on cost and quality. So, these two laws are, in a way, their attempt to do so.
