Chief Maggie DeBoard is pleased to announce that the Herndon Police Department (HPD), as part of an effort to promote inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with sensory needs, has become the first law enforcement agency in Virginia to train every officer in sensory inclusion in partnership with KultureCity. The certification process entailed officers at HPD be trained by leading medical and neurodivergent professionals on how to recognize community members with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation. Sensory bags, equipped with noise canceling headphones (provided by Puro Sound Labs), fidget tools, and verbal cue cards will be available in all HPD cruisers for community members who may feel overwhelmed by the environment or emergency situation. Last month, the Herndon Police Department proudly received it’s 11th?re-accreditation Meritorious Award with CALEA, a program that provides public safety agencies an opportunity to voluntarily meet an established set of professional national standards reviewed by independent subject matter experts.?CALEA re-accreditation is an intensive 4-year process that highlights our agency’s continuous pursuit of excellence and best practices through annual reviews and other assessment measures. "We take great pride in our ongoing record of re-accreditation through CALEA, which began before my tenure and spans 38 years. The Herndon Police Department considers our relationship with CALEA to be a vital part of our commitment to staying progressive and up-to-date in our policies and practices, as well as being accountable to the community we serve," Chief Maggie DeBoard said. "The feedback we received throughout the four-year process was invaluable in helping us implement effective and continuous improvements within our agency." ?? The Herndon Police Department proudly congratulates Lieutenant Jeff Lange on his graduation from the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police & Foundation, Inc.'s Professional Executive Leadership School (PELS). Lt. Lange has been with the department for 17 years and has served as a detective and field training officer. He is currently oversees the Criminal Investigations Section, is HPD's polygraph examiner, and serves as the Vice President of Greater Herndon FOP Lodge 64. PELS is an intensive three-week leadership education program conducted in cooperation with the University of Richmond. This program is designed for individuals who currently serve in executive level positions within their organizations. The objective of this program is to acquaint participants with best practices in leadership, challenge them to reflect upon their own leadership competency, and examine ways of achieving both personal and professional growth. "I am grateful for the opportunity to attend PELS and gain insight from law enforcement leadership throughout the Commonwealth," Lange said. We value the opportunity to send our commanders to this executive law enforcement training that builds on their professional growth and development. Congratulations, Lt. Lange!
