The Detention Deputy in Training, while working under the direct supervision of a certified Operations Detention Deputy, is directly responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates. The responsibility of the Detention Deputy in Training is to assist in the security and integrity of the facility, which includes the prevention of escape, injury to the staff, or injury to inmates. Due to the classification status of inmates housed in the Hernando County Detention Center housing units, extreme caution must be exercised during the regular discharge of duties. The Detention Deputy in Training works closely with the Operations Detention Deputy, the Operations Control Room Operator, and the Shift Supervisor. The responsibilities of the Detention Deputy in Training are to assist in supervising inmates housed in this section, including visitation, meals, phone calls, linen, and uniform exchanges, movement of inmates, and recreation. The Detention Deputy in Training reports directly to the Operations Corporal assigned by the Operations Sergeant. If you are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement, this is a great opportunity to consider. As a Detention Deputy, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the safety and security of the detention center, ensuring the well-being of inmates, and upholding the law. To be eligible for this program, you need to meet certain criteria. You must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, pass a law enforcement background check and pass the CJBAT. The program offers: ? Full-time position as a Detention Deputy in Training ? Salary of $49,000 per year with benefits while you are attending the academy. ? Your salary will increase immediately to $59,505 upon passing the state exam. ? Cost of the corrections academy will be covered by HCSO. ? You will be able to attend the academy on duty. ? You will begin the Field Training Program immediately which will give you hands-on training and knowledge of the profession before even attending the academy. ? You will begin earning Special Risk retirement in the Florida Retirement System. This means that you can collect a full retirement in just 25 years. ? There is also long term potential to attend the cross-over academy and become a Law Enforcement Deputy if that is your goal. Four Female Inmates at Hernando County Detention Center Earn GEDs Four female inmates at the Hernando County Detention Center were recognized for their remarkable achievement of earning their General Education Development (GED) diplomas during a special graduation ceremony. The event was a proud moment for the inmates and the facility, showcasing the importance of educational opportunities within the corrections environment. The following inmates were honored for their dedication and perseverance in completing their GEDs: ? Dana Edwards ? Danielle Sharay ? Kristine Schaefer ? Rhonda Smith County Commissioner Brian Hawkins was on hand to offer his congratulations to the graduates. Major Shaun Klucznik, was also there to offer words of encouragement. The GED program is one of many offered through the Re-Entry & Programs Unit at the Hernando County Detention Center, all of which aim to equip inmates with the skills necessary for success after incarceration. Special thanks to our Re-Entry Coordinator, Derek Saunier, for helping make this program run smoothly. Sheriff Nienhuis and the Hernando County Sheriff's Office remain dedicated to providing educational and vocational opportunities that support inmates' personal growth and reduce their likelihood of reoffending.

AJA’s Advancing Jail Operations: Implementing Objective Jail Classification – Course Completed at Hernando County Sheriff’s Office The American Jail Association Advancing Jail Operations: Implementing Objective Jail Classification course wrapped up at the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office in Brooksville, FL! Over the past two days, attendees engaged in real-world application, group exercises, and scenario-based discussions to reinforce best practices in objective jail classification. Lieutenant Justin Beetz, CJM and Sergeant Brad Collito led dynamic sessions, challenging participants to apply classification principles to enhance safety, security, and inmate management. Agencies from Florida and Alabama collaborated throughout the course, sharing insights and strategies to strengthen jail operations.
