关于我们

Our digital ways to include the excluded are designed to precisely meet the unique needs of the user, and their environment. They are affordable, safe, and easy to access and use. They provide the user with new, or better access to information, services or people, to help them safely progress their life, and / or understand how to progress the lives of others. We create digital products for some of the world's leading social impact organisations including CARE International, Plan International, Girl Effect, Malala Fund, Youth Endowment Fund and YoungMinds. Collectively, our products have helped to include over 25 million excluded people.

Big news from Here I Am! Today we’re excited to share our new chapter: A clearer focus. A sharper offer. A website that finally reflects the full depth of our work. Our original mission — “designing, building and scaling digital products to include the excluded” - was where we started. But it no longer captured what we really do, or what the world needs now. We’ve broadened our scope, deepened our impact, and refined how we talk about it. Whilst some things have evolved, our values and mission remain the same, and we’re still proud to be called? Here I Am?- a name inspired by suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst’s 1913?Freedom or Death?speech. Her words, “So here am I,” were a declaration of voice, protest and progress. It mattered then, and it matters just as much now. We operate in an increasingly complex world - where crises are escalating, resources are stretched, and ethical trade-offs are inevitable. When ethics and emergencies collide, the question is not whether to compromise, but how to navigate those compromises responsibly. We have created an Ethical Consent Matrix as a practical tool to help us make informed, values-driven decisions in fast-moving humanitarian settings. It doesn’t eliminate difficult choices, but it ensures we approach them with clarity, accountability, and respect for those at the heart of the crisis. We hope you find this useful, and if you have any ideas to improve it, we would love to hear them.

?? When ethics and emergencies collide, how do we decide? ?? The urgency to give support often conflicts with the slow, rigorous pace of traditional ethical protocols. In these high-stakes moments, we face a tough dilemma: how do we protect dignity and privacy - without sacrificing speed and support? At Here I Am Studio, we’ve spent over a decade refining how we approach consent in humanitarian settings - and we’ve learned that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. From informed to implied, there are six types of consent - each suited to different crisis scenarios. To navigate these complexities, we’ve developed the Ethical Consent Matrix, a practical tool for balancing ethics, urgency, and risk in real time. In this complex world - where crises are escalating, resources are stretched, and ethical trade-offs are inevitable, we hope this matrix helps to ensure we can continue to make the right choices. (Its a work in progress though so please share any ideas you have to make it better). ?? Read our full post here: https://bit.ly/3D7rmRw

USAID’s Funding Freeze: Capturing the Real Human Impact. The recent freeze on USAID funding is a devastating crisis with life-threatening consequences for vulnerable communities worldwide. While debates rage about policy and power, the reality on the ground is being overlooked: clinics are closing, treatments are being disrupted, and lives are at risk. Yet the data being shared doesn’t tell the full story. So, we - Here I Am Studio, Wayan Vota and ICTworks want to help by collecting and sharing the human impact of this freeze. Through a survey on Fatima Research, our ethical research platform, we will collect firsthand stories in the form of photos, audio, and written responses. In collaboration with Wayan and ICT Works, we’ll rapidly analyse and share the findings - helping to ensure that the real consequences of this funding freeze are seen, heard, and understood. What We’re Doing: 1. Capturing Stories: From clinic closures to treatment shortages - and the resilience of those affected. 2. Analysing the findings: We will analyse and collate the stories shared. 3. Amplifying Voices: Publishing and sharing findings widely. How You Can Help: 1. Share Your Story – If you're a local programme manager, healthcare worker, or part of an affected organisation, complete the survey. 2. Support Our Analysis – If you're a researcher, help us rapidly analyse the findings. 3. Spread the Word – Share this post widely so we can gather as many stories as possible and build a fuller picture of the impact. If you want to share your story or support us with our analysis, please email us at [email protected]

The social impact sector still has a lot to learn about how to build and scale successful and sustainable digital products and services - so we are really excited to learn from Jimmy Hopton's new series, sharing his learnings as a designer, founding and scaling Birdie into a global health care ecosystem. Check out his first post on the importance of asking the right questions. ????

Great products start with great research. But if you’re not asking the right questions—or asking them in the right way—you might end up solving the wrong problem. I learned this firsthand while working on performance improvements for the Birdie app. From survey data, we saw a flood of complaints from carers about the app “crashing.” But when we dug deeper in user interviews, we discovered something surprising: ?? They didn’t mean “crashing” in the technical sense. ?? What they actually meant was the app freezing or becoming unresponsive. This is a completely different issue for engineering to solve. Without this clarity, we could have wasted engineering time and resource chasing a problem that didn’t exist. ?? Clarity over the problem = saved time and money for your business. It’s not just about what you ask, but how you ask it. ? Ask clarifying questions. When users describe an issue, don’t assume you understand—dig deeper. ?? e.g. Can you describe to me exactly what happens when the app “crashes”? ? Use an interview guide, not a script. A rigid script can limit discovery. Instead, structure your interview around key themes but allow for a natural flow. ? Embrace natural conversation. The most valuable insights often come when users feel comfortable to elaborate, vent, and share unexpected details. Some of the best insights come from going off-script. The goal of user research isn’t just to collect data—it’s to uncover the real problems so we can build the right solutions. What’s a time when asking better questions led you to a surprising insight? ??

Happy New Year! ?? We're so proud to see Diana's reflections on a year of impactful work and personal growth. From co-creation workshops in Kenya to design sprints in Nigeria, Diana has exemplified the values of empathy, collaboration, and innovation that drive Here I Am. Here's to a 2025 filled with more transformative projects and meaningful design.

Happy New Year! As I start 2025, I’m reflecting on the transformative experiences that shaped my career in 2024. It was a year of growth, resilience, and impactful work. While it brought personal challenges, it also offered opportunities to deepen my expertise and advance my career as a designer. One of the standout moments was being part of co-creation workshops in Kenya. Collaborating with community-based organizations and young adolescents, I contributed to the design of an app that provides accessible, confidential sexual health information. My role spanned from co-facilitating hybrid definition workshops—seamlessly integrating online and in-person teams—to leading UX testing sessions, where I refined the user experience based on real feedback. This experience strengthened my ability to facilitate meaningful discussions, create safe and inclusive spaces, and collaboratively refine designs to meet user needs. Another pivotal moment was traveling to Nigeria to work alongside community health workers and teachers. In this project, I served as a co-facilitator, gaining invaluable insights into how design can address diverse challenges. Collaborating with the team, I helped ensure the solutions were rooted in the participants' lived experiences and practical realities. Witnessing a Google Ventures Design Sprint unfold—from problem definition to a tailored solution—was a masterclass in rapid, impactful innovation. Through these experiences, I’ve deepened my expertise in: ? Human-Centered Design (HCD): Crafting solutions that are not just functional but genuinely transformative for end users. ? Facilitation: Designing and leading workshops that bridge diverse perspectives to uncover actionable insights. ? UX Research & Testing: Creating intuitive, user-first designs through rigorous research and iterative testing. ? Co-Creation: Partnering with communities and stakeholders to develop solutions that align with their unique needs. Special thanks to Here I Am Studio and Girl Effect teams in Kenya and Nigeria for the trust, collaboration, and teamwork that made these projects possible. Looking ahead, I’m excited to bring this experience to new challenges—whether through facilitating impactful workshops, leading UX initiatives, or leveraging methodologies like Google Ventures Sprints to deliver rapid, meaningful results. My mission remains clear: to design with empathy and purpose, ensuring every solution I craft addresses real human needs and drives lasting impact. Here’s to a year of growth, collaboration, and impactful design! ?? #HumanCenteredDesign #UXDesign #CoCreation #WorkshopFacilitation #ImpactDrivenDesign

Head of Innovation Service at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency

Diversity. Equity. Inclusion. They’re not just buzzwords – they’re core principles that the Innovation Service puts into practice every day, in our workplace and in our programming. We’re working hard to ensure that the innovation space within UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and beyond is inclusive – and that our work drives a more equitable future for colleagues and the communities we work with and for, particularly those experiencing overlapping vulnerabilities.? ? This week is an important one for this agenda. It’s the start of the #16Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence – a critical moment to think about the specific risks experienced by refugee women and girls. To mark this moment, we’re highlighting an emergent threat in this space: technology-facilitated #GBV. Read our blog explaining what this is, how it affects displaced women, and pathways to addressing it and delivering a more inclusive, safer digital world: https://lnkd.in/eAhP7_Xj ? One of the ways the Innovation Service is working to bridge the digital gender divide is by empowering refugee led organizations to deliver their own #digitalinclusion projects. Yesterday, we proudly launched our second ever Digital Gender Inclusion and Innovation Bootcamp, bringing together more than 40 organizations led by forcibly displaced women from around the world. Delivered alongside our partner Here I Am Studio, this initiative aims to build capacity in promoting digital gender equality. We can’t wait to see how these forward-thinking organizations put their skills into practice. ? We’re committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable innovation ecosystem that leaves no one behind – and our #DEI Action Plan 2024-2026, launched a few months ago, firmly underpins this aspiration. We know new tools and ideas have the potential to shape a better future for people #ForcedtoFlee, and we’re committed to driving forward that change, hand in hand with the communities we work with and for. ?
