Our Harrisburg staff recently gathered together to support an organization with special meaning for a member of our accounting team, Maureen McHugh: Anna’s Gift Foundation.?Anna’s Gift provides activity kits for hospitalized children and their families. It was founded by one of Maureen’s close friends, Liz Tomalis.?They attend the same church, and their daughters are friends from school, but they have another bond that connects them: They have both spent many hours in the hospital with a sick child. Liz’s daughter Anna battled cancer for three years and passed away in 2008. She founded Anna’s Gift to honor her daughter’s fun, creative spirit and help other families undergoing serious medical treatments.?Maureen and her family had volunteered many times over the years to create kits for families through the foundation, then the need hit close to home.?Maureen’s oldest daughter discovered a benign but growing tumor behind her breastbone at the age of 16.?Throughout this scary and confusing time, “Liz was a person that I could lean on to ask questions and help us navigate the treatment process,” Maureen said. “When you have a sick teenager who is missing out on activities because they aren’t feeling well, Anna’s Gift kits help.?They can create something and take their mind off being sick, even if it’s just for a little while.”?This summer, after 6 years of surgeries, lab tests, and CT scans, Maureen’s daughter successfully completed treatment and is doing well! Knowing the positive impact these kits can have on families, Maureen brought our Harrisburg team together to create kits, which will be delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey.?Our team made approximately: ·???????300 beaded bracelet kits ·???????150 bird house kits ·???????100 tied pillow kits (and cut fabric for 100 more) Each year, Anna’s Gift Foundation delivers approximately 7,000 kits to hospitals in Hershey, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia; Baltimore, MD; and Washington, D.C.?You can learn more about Anna and how to support the foundation at their website: https://annasgift.org/ #hrgVolunteers

Sommer Schneller is returning to her roots this week, bringing a team of HRG employee-owners to Carnegie Mellon University's civil and environmental engineering lounge to chat with students about projects and daily work in the industry.?Sommer is a 2021 CMU grad with a bachelor’s degree in architecture and environmental/sustainability studies.?She shared a photo with us from her freshman year (with an Andrew Carnegie lookalike) and a few words of advice she would give her younger self if she could go back in time below. Stop by and chat with Sommer about working in the engineering industry and maybe hear more about her time on campus (leading a Prism subgroup, running tech for the drama club, and savoring late-night brownie Sundays at the Underground) when HRG takes over the CMU Civil & Environmental Engineering Lounge this Wednesday. Our Harrisburg Geomatics team volunteered with the Central PA Conservancy recently to support their conservation efforts and improve the Letort Spring Garden Preserve in Carlisle.?They built ADA accessible benches and picnic tables and propagated and potted plants for distribution throughout the preserve.?While they were there, the conservancy’s land steward Jesse Price gave them a tour of the preserve and discussed their efforts to create a new ADA accessible trail, remove invasive species, and more.?Thank you, Jesse, for taking the time to meet with us and thank you to all of the conservancy staff for the work they do.?Thank you also to everyone on the Geomatics team that took time out of their schedule to support this valuable community resource. #hrgVolunteers

She will oversee a team of people embedded in HRG’s primary markets – government, utilities, and institutions – connecting with new clients, getting to know their operations, and assembling a team within HRG uniquely suited to meet their needs.?This team will ensure HRG is deeply attuned to the challenges our clients face, while creating capacity for technical and project delivery leaders to excel in their roles. “To serve our clients best,” HRG’s Chief Services Officer, Josh Fox says, “we need to deeply embed ourselves in the markets we serve, building relationships and understanding their needs.?We also need to have a high level of technical expertise in the services we offer, staying up to date on emerging trends and technologies so that we are at the forefront of quality and innovation.?At the same time, we need to be an expert at project delivery, steering projects through challenges while meeting all schedule and budget goals.?Each of these responsibilities requires unique skillsets and dedicated effort, so we wanted to establish leaders for each area while facilitating collaboration across all three channels.” Adrienne is well-suited for her new role.?She has more than 20 years of experience at HRG, serving clients across every industry and geographic we region we serve, and has consistently demonstrated deep insight into our clients’ needs and goals.?She previously served as practice area leader for HRG’s Strategic Management & Capital Solutions group, helping clients streamline operations and achieve financial sustainability. She has also served in a variety of leadership positions with industry and community organizations, such as the Society of Women Environmental Professionals, Pennsylvania Municipal Authorities Association (PMAA) Women’s Initiative Network (WIN) Committee, Pennsylvania Water Environment Association (PWEA)'s Utility Management Committee, and Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania. We’re excited to see shovels in the ground for an upgraded playground at Hopewell Community Park.?Planned improvements include two new climbing structures, two swing sets, and a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round.?A paved walkway will connect the various play areas, as shown in the plan below. Our team assisted with initial master planning and conceptual design, then carried the selected concept through final design and bidding. We are now assisting with construction administration and inspection. Thank you to the township for the opportunity to work on this project and to State Representative Matzie for helping the township secure almost $350,000 to fund the improvements.

Earlier this year, we shared photos from the John Klein Golf Classic.?Last month, we held our first annual Mark Smith Classic. It’s becoming a fun tradition to get together and shine a spotlight on a member of the team who everyone truly appreciates. “Mark makes everyone around him a better person,” Chad Hanley says. “His kindness, patience, way of teaching, and deliberate thoughtfulness are all daily treasures.” Thanks to everyone who came out to have a good time with us and shoutout to Anna Pravlochak, who makes the best prizes! David McCowin, PE, CBSI, RJ Pale, and Bill Wieserman, PE, CBSI, NCTI, recently inspected Pike Run Bridge No. 1 in Coal Center Borough, Washington County, PA.?HRG and TRC Companies, Inc. are collaborating on rehabilitation of this historic bridge and were in the field to document its original design, materials, and previous modifications. The bridge is currently closed due to advanced corrosion and section loss of the bottom chord.?Rehabilitation plans will prioritize historically appropriate details, and all designs will comply with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Our Pittsburgh team members recently gathered together for two community service projects supporting the The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and the Evans City Community Food Cupboard. Brynn Miller, Clay Whitlatch, Eric Belles, Katie Valla, Andrew Scampone and Kristen Vasilakis met with Conservancy volunteers at the Bear Run Nature Preserve to replace trail markers, clear bridges, trim vegetation along the sides of the trails, and clean out swales that cross the trail path. Afterward, a few of them drove down to Ohiopyle to enjoy the scenic views and a little bit of ice cream. Kristen also joined Bob Grimm, Dan Angelo, Devin Dunwoody, and Landon Hacker to drop off food that HRG had collected for the Food Cupboard. This food will be used to create the Thanksgiving basket distribution to local families in need. Thank you to the Food Cupboard and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy for the work they do in our local communities, and thank you for the opportunity serve. #HRGvolunteers

The Meritus Commons Topping Out Celebration marked an exciting milestone, providing a moment to reflect on the collective achievements of this remarkable project. Meritus Commons will offer 342 apartment units, dedicated to housing future doctors who will study at the Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine (MSOM). Of these, 182 Phase 1 units are on track to be move-in ready by Summer 2025—a testament to the team's commitment in meeting an ambitious 24-month schedule from design and permitting to completion. HRG has been honored to collaborate with an exceptional Integrated Project Delivery Team, playing a part in supporting Meritus Health’s vision to advance public health across Washington County, MD, and the region. This project will not only make contributions to address the national physician shortage, but also lay a foundation for the growth of superior healthcare for years to come. It was inspiring to see business and community leaders from both Maryland and Pennsylvania come together to celebrate the innovative vision and efforts that Meritus has brought to bear.
