This time last year I was heading to NYC to attend In Common: Romare Bearden and New Approaches to Art, Race & Economy at The New School. I reconnected with Diedra Harris-Kelley and met fabulous people from the Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy, like Henry A. J. Ramos, Darrick Hamilton and Gary Cunningham. The symposium was great, and two amazing things for me were born from there. I was fortunate to work with Henry at the Institute to write an article, Bearden and His Continuing Influence on Art, Society, and Economy, and participated in an interview. They and many other articles and interviews are available now. https://lnkd.in/gG_YFhQf You may remember, The Conversation: Inspired teaching, connections, and community, was an exhibition in July 2024. Romare Bearden’s artwork exhibited in our small town with work by my students and I. Now you can see photos and more at herARTS in Action’s website. https://lnkd.in/gRMswnJe As an artist with Bearden as her muse, this last year has been truly AMAZING!!

Today is World Children’s Day! A day to reflect on our collective responsibility to nurture, protect, and empower the next generation. Children are our greatest treasure, and their potential is boundless, when given the opportunity to thrive. Earlier this year, we took a meaningful step by commissioning a library in Afari, Ghana, built to honor my grandfather, the King of Afari in Kumasi. A lifelong advocate for children’s education, he believed deeply in the transformative power of knowledge. This library is more than a tribute; it’s a living legacy. It stands as a beacon of hope, a gateway to learning, and a promise that every child deserves the tools to dream big and achieve even more. This vision became a reality thanks to our incredible partners:? Books For Africa , Africa Strong Inc., DELORES WORKS, herARTS in Action, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation. Your unwavering dedication to improving the lives of children inspires us all. Together, we are planting seeds of hope that will grow for generations to come.? What can you do today to make a difference for children in your community or across the globe? Whether it’s advocating for better policies, volunteering your time, donating resources, or simply being a voice for those who need it most, remember: We all have a part to play. And every small action creates ripples of change. Let’s commit to a world where every child has the chance to reach their full potential. Because when children flourish, the world thrives. #WorldChildrensDay #EveryChildMatters #EducationForAll #LegacyOfLearning #ActForChildren Delores Henderson, Ph.D. Mercedes H. We are excited to share that Sarah Drake, M.S. was invited to write an article for Development Agenda, a magazine in Nigeria focused on human development, the environment, natural resources management, and social justice in Africa. She was asked to share our experiences in Burkina Faso as it relates to out of school time and the impact on society as a whole. Once the whole magazine is online we will share, but for now, here is her article.
