NEWS: Northeastern University Constructs Roux Institute Campus in Portland -- Northeastern University is constructing a permanent campus for the The Roux Institute at Northeastern University in Portland, Maine. Designed by CambridgeSeven, the $500 million project will feature the 245,000-sf Alfond Center, a vibrant hub for learning, research, and collaboration. The six-story facility will accommodate programs in artificial intelligence, computer and data sciences, digital engineering, life sciences, and medicine. Computational academic spaces, wet labs, and active learning classrooms will be arranged around a central gathering area with lecture, conference, and meeting venues. Targeting net-zero carbon emissions, the structure will be fully electric, drawing power for heating and cooling systems from geothermal wells. A climate-adaptive fa?ade will improve energy efficiency, and the selection of local, low-carbon materials will reduce the environmental impact of construction. A three-story section integrating mass timber components will be covered by a 12,000-sf rooftop garden. Built on the site of the B&M Baked Beans plant, the campus will also offer a 610-car parking garage, a childcare center, and public green spaces. Adjacent to the Alfond Center, a 58,000-sf former factory will be renovated to serve as a business incubator. Consigli Construction Co., Inc. is the general contractor, with Thornton Tomasetti as structural and sustainability engineer and HERA Laboratory Planners as lab design consultant.
