A recently published review, led by Ruiqi Deng, of 69 experimental research studies on interventions using ChatGPT to support student learning, aims to provide some early insights for those evaluating generative AI integration in education. Looking beyond the “Highlights”: 1. Academic Performance While studies indicate that using ChatGPT can boost academic performance, these gains may stem from biases in assessment design and evaluation rather than representing genuine improvements in learning. Effects appear larger in arts and humanities, and results are also stronger in classroom-based, short-duration interventions. 2. Affective-Motivational States The use of ChatGPT positively influences student motivation and enjoyment of learning, particularly in higher education settings. Short-term novelty effects may exaggerate these benefits, so longitudinal studies will be needed to determine whether these types of impacts persist. 3. Higher-Order Thinking While students perceive improvements in higher-order thinking skills with ChatGPT interventions, these claims often rely on self-reports, and are therefore susceptible to overestimation. The authors suggest that objective measures, such as standardised critical thinking tests, are needed to validate these claims. 4. Mental Effort The availability of ChatGPT reduces the mental effort required for learning tasks through cognitive offloading, though some studies suggest it may weaken critical thinking. 5. Self-Efficacy ChatGPT's impact on self-efficacy is inconsistent across the studies. While these experimental studies can provide some initial insights into associations between the use of ChatGPT and a range of outcomes, they don’t consider the longer term learning effects of generative AI use. https://lnkd.in/g4a_GhHG

    Thank you Zach Kinzler for inviting me to come on your podcast! I talked more than I thought I would about my piano-AI analogy! Every time I ponder it, I become more convinced of its aptness. #ai #genai #aieducation #aiworkplace #aitraining #aipiano #piano #music #musician #generativeai #humanai #humanmachineinteraction #humancomputerinteraction #hmi #hci

What do AI and playing the piano have in common? In the latest episode of the Smarter Campus Podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Reed Hepler, Digital Initiatives Librarian and Archivist at the College of Southern Idaho. Reed shared incredible insights into the inner workings of AI and why understanding how it functions (at a high level) is so important. One of my favorite moments was Reed’s piano analogy: “Before you play a note on the piano, you read the sheet music and think through what you’re about to do. It’s the same with AI—you can’t just walk up and expect to play perfectly.” This comparison really hit home for me and highlights the thoughtful approach we need when working with AI. We also dove into how Reed uses AI in creative projects, like building tabletop games, and the role of prompting in making AI truly work for you. If you’ve ever been curious about what AI really is and how to use it effectively, this episode is for you.
