It’s #Thanksgiving Day and the Prospect Park Track Club will host their annual five-mile Turkey Trot: Race for Reconciliation run. Partnering with the American Indian Community House (AICH), the race helps to raise money for AICH's mission to improve and promote the wellbeing of the city's Indigenous community on Lenape land. Wake Forest University School of Divinity, the University’s Wake the Arts Center, and Winston-Salem’s North Carolina Black Repertory Theatre (NC Black Rep) have forged an exciting partnership fueled by a Luce Religion and Theology grant. The recent successes of the Finding Holy Ground grant, which allowed the production of two plays at the 2024 International Black Theatre Festival in July, generated interest in future collaborations, particularly concerning diverse communities of faith. On this episode of University of Virginia Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy’s "Grounds to Listen" podcast, film producer and director (and Religion and Theology grantee) Nicholas Ma talks with Luce board member Dean Ian H. Solomon about his latest work, "Leap of Faith" from Picturehouse. Fostering dialogue across divides: Twelve diverse Christian leaders find hope and fellowship at a series of boundary-breaking retreats in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Brought together by Rev. Michael Gulker of The Colossian Forum, five women and seven men struggle with some of today’s most contentious issues. The divisions between them become apparent and test both their common belief in the universal importance of love and kindness and the bonds they build over the course of a year. Inspiring and provocative, LEAP OF FAITH explores whether we can disagree and still belong to each other in a divided world. Why this work is important: The conversation, recorded this summer prior to the November 2024 election, offers inspiration and hope to those looking to bridge divides and find beauty in recognizing our common humanity. Weekend Reading: How New York City is reclaiming its Native American roots on BBC 2024 marks the 400th anniversary of NYC’s founding — which also marks the beginning of the forced removal of the Indigenous Lenape people. As the city honors Native American Heritage Month this month, it's a good reminder to visitors and residents alike that the city is still home to a thriving Native community whose numbers are now growing. Liana S., founder of Luce Indigenous Knowledge grantee Relative Arts, told BBC: “You're not only on Native land in November, you're on Native land every day of the year, and we need that kind of support and visibility every day of the year." To learn about the city's rich Native American past and experience its thriving present, check out: ??The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian ??American Indian Community House (AICH) ??Relative Arts and more! The Penn Project on the Future of U.S.-China Relations develops recommendations for U.S. policies toward China from next generation China scholars and analysts, who are selected as Project Fellows through a competitive process. Project Fellows are distributed across each of the Project’s six key issue areas: National Security; Trade & Competitiveness; Technology; Human Rights, Law, & Democracy; Climate & Environment; and Research, Education, & Academic Freedom. Why this initiative is important: The Project’s goal is to deepen U.S. capacity to understand and evaluate critical issues in the U.S.-China relationship. The Call for Applications for the third cohort will be issued in December 2024. https://buff.ly/4eoU7WF

Last week, a group of artists, writers, activists, musicians, community leaders, and scholars gathered together in New Orleans to celebrate and close out the Rivers Institute’s?second annual Confluence program. ??Together, they explored “Marronage; Meaning Wild” as a conceptual and literal construction of the wetland—as a site of refuge and resistance, home to histories and futures of cross-cultural care. Out of this landscape and other mirroring environments, this Confluence explored the complex relationships between communities and land and centered collective responsibility for the unstable ground we share. ??Why this work is important: In a time of disconnectivity from the environment and the climate crisis, centering #Indigenous knowledge about the land we live on and amplifying Indigenous voices and the work of their communities is more important than ever. As is finding connection and community in nature. Learn more about the Rivers Institute for Contemporary Art & Thought (Rivers) here: https://lnkd.in/g4qYVQ3A ??: All photos by Andrea Andersson
