#WeAreNotAbleToLiveInTheSky by Mara Kardas-Nelson is NPR's book of the day! Listen to this overview of two books that "question the efficacy of financial systems that are meant to help lift people out of poverty." —NPR Check it out: https://lnkd.in/dgsu4qZ9 A bit more about the book: Mara Kardas-Nelson’s?We Are Not Able to Live?in the Sky?is about unintended consequences, blind optimism, and the decades-long ramifications of seemingly small policy choices. The book is rooted in the stories of women borrowers in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Their narratives, woven through a deep history of modern international development, are set against the rise of Yunus’s vision that tiny loans would “put poverty in museums.” Kardas-Nelson asks: What is missed with a single, financially focused solution to global inequity that ignores the real drivers of poverty? Who stands to benefit and, more important, who gets left behind?

Read more about the book below and here: https://lnkd.in/e4kwN47S ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ About the book: On her wedding day in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1968, Rafaela Acu?a y Daubón has mild misgivings, but she marries Peter Brennan Jr. anyway, in a blaze of romantic optimism. She has no way of knowing how dramatically her life will change when she uproots her young family to start over in the American Midwest, unleashing a fleet of disappointments. Against the backdrop of her mother’s isolation in St. Louis, Missouri in the 1980s, Rafaela’s daughter, Ruth Brennan, longs only to belong. Eager to fit in, Ruth lets go of her language, habits, and childhood memories of Puerto Rico. It’s not until decades later, when Ruth’s own daughter, Daisy, returns to Puerto Rico that her mother and grandmother begin to truly reflect on the choices that have come to define their lives. When a hurricane ravages the island in 2023, leaving Daisy critically injured, Rafaela and Ruth return to the city where it all began. As they gather at Daisy’s bedside, they’re confronted by the pasts that brought them to this point. We follow them as they come of age, fall in love, take risks, and contend with all the heartbreaks, triumphs, and reversals of fortune — both good and bad — that make up a meaningful life. As old memories come to light, so do buried secrets, leaving everyone in the family wondering exactly where it is that they belong.

International Speaker on Workplace Wellness | CEO of Motion Infusion | Bestselling Author | Workplace Wellness and Wellbeing Expert
October 10th is World Mental Health Day, now expanded to World Mental Health Month. If there is ever a time we need to be addressing mental health, it’s now. It goes without saying that we are facing a mental health crisis and for many, work is the number one source of their mental distress. Put another way: The way we’re working simply is not working. How did we get here and what do we do? Enter Brigid Schulte, my next guest on LinkedIn Live, and author of the New York Times bestseller Overwhelmed and just-released Over Work: Transforming the Daily Grind in the Quest for a Better Life. Brigid is an award-winning journalist formerly for the Washington Post, where she was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize. She is also the director of the Better Life Lab, the work-family justice and gender equity program at New America. As Brigid explains, rising rates of mental distress cannot be explained away by individual dysfunction or ameliorated by individual solutions. Rather, this mental health crisis, which is impacting “Americans across all demographics, industries, and socioeconomic levels,” is representative of a “full-system failure in our structure of work.” During the live conversation we will be discussing the following topics: - American Karoshi: How overwork has become a fact of life in the U.S. - Why redesigning work is easier said than done - Models we can look to around the world - How each of us can take steps to transform the daily grind Bring your questions and we look forward to ‘seeing’ you on LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube on Wednesday, October 23rd at 11 AM PT.
