On International Women’s Day, a student from Washburn High School hosted a Doing Good for Hennepin Healthcare activity at a local senior living residence. This kindhearted group lovingly created snack packs for healthcare heroes. We are grateful for their generosity! #givegenerously #hereforlife If your company or group would like to schedule a future Doing Good for Hennepin Healthcare event, visit https://lnkd.in/gJTZYzQj.

It’s been five years since the Coronavirus pandemic began. Dr. Caitlin Eccles-Radtke and Dr. John Hick with Hennepin Healthcare were on the frontlines from the very beginning. Their memories from five years ago range from mask shortages to trying to secure overflow hospital space around the metro. “Covid taught me a lot of lessons about resilience, but it also taught me about vulnerability,” said Hick. “I think we are all still processing what we went through,” added Eccles-Radtke.

Karim Ali, MD – Resident, Internal Medicine “I was taking care of a patient who was hospitalized because of complications with end-stage lung cancer. She knew the care plan was palliative and didn’t need anyone to remind her of that. About halfway into her stay here, I shifted my conversations with her. Instead of always talking about the care plan, I asked her about her favorite books and movies. I read the summary of her favorite book so we could talk about it more. After her hospitalization, she died about two weeks later in her home. But before she passed, she told me something I’ll never forget – that I added more to her life than any doctor has. That stuck with me. It wasn’t by providing the best medical care, but by talking with her and asking questions about her life. It was by bringing her a diet coke. It was those small things that added up more for her than treatment plans.” Hennepin Healthcare Foundation is proud to highlight authentic stories from the wide variety of human beings who connect with our mission. Emergency Departments are intense, especially at HCMC, a major Level I Trauma Center in the heart of downtown. We are so thankful for our teams of EMS, paramedics, physician experts, and of course, our incredible nurses who save lives daily inside our ED. On the latest episode of The Healthy Matters Podcast, Dr. Hilden sits down with one of our Emergency Medicine/Critical Care nurses, Kara Fussy, and they will describe in detail the controlled chaos that happens behind those doors every day. Kara also has experienced quite a few “interesting” moments over the years that she’ll be sharing too, that you won’t want to miss! Listen now at healthymatters.org or wherever you get your podcasts.
