Kunal Gupta, MD – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit “The NICU team recently had a groundbreaking moment. We cared for a baby weighing just over 300 grams who, remarkably, never required a breathing tube. This is extraordinary as preterm infants of this size typically need intubation for respiratory support. To achieve this goal, we shed our preconceived notions. Our team came together with a shared goal – to avoid intubation unless it was absolutely necessary. This took more intensive monitoring, frequent interventions, and flexibility. The baby is now three times their birth weight – an incredible milestone! In the NICU, we’ve cultivated a culture of mutual respect and trust. When a colleague offers their opinion, we know it’s grounded in sound knowledge and good judgment. We also draw strength from each other’s skills — whether it’s someone’s ability to connect with families or another’s expertise in clinical care. No one of us has all the answers, and we don’t expect anyone to. What matters is that we bring our strengths together, like building a complex Lego set — each piece contributing to a greater whole.” Hennepin Healthcare Foundation is proud to highlight authentic stories from the wide variety of human beings who connect with our mission. Last week, the Hennepin Healthcare Health Equity Department held its first two-day Health Equity Summit: Learning through Vulnerability and Perseverance. The summit showcased the transformative power of embracing challenges and learning from setbacks and highlighted how individuals, teams, and organizations turned obstacles into opportunities for growth in health equity and DEI. The Health Equity Summit adjourned Friday afternoon, but the work continues. A reminder from Nneka Sederstrom, PhD, MPH, MA, FCCP, FCCM, Chief Health Equity Officer, in her opening remarks: “As healthcare professionals, advocates, and leaders, our mission is to create a world where equity is not just an idea but a reality. A world where access to care is not determined by race, income, or geography. A world where communities thrive, families are safe, and every person can live a full and healthy life. But this vision cannot be achieved without first acknowledging the roots of the problems we seek to solve and committing to pulling them up." Congratulations to our November Medical Assistant of the Month, Takeitha! Takeitha works at our East Lake Clinic and both coworkers and patients have nothing but high praise for her. Colleagues say she is always willing to help (with her contagious and cheerful attitude!). With her patients, she is compassionate and often goes above and beyond by advocating for them. She is truly one of a kind and we are lucky to have Takeitha at our East Lake Clinic!

Part of the Health Equity team at Hennepin Healthcare. A management systems, workforce development, Lean and innovation geek.
The Talent Garden initiative held it's thirteenth Youth Summit, our third Latine Youth with Stethoscopes, amidst another incredibly busy week for the people of Hennepin Healthcare. Almost a hundred teens came to our campus to learn about, and perhaps fall in love a little bit with the best careers in healthcare. A panel of medical providers and medical students spent an hour with each group, and the young people also had the opportunity to practice Dermatology procedures, try their hands at the tools of Dentistry, and peer into a microscope guided by experienced pathologists. In our simulation areas, young scholars learned to use and received both a stethoscope and a pulse oximeter, tried their hand at CPR and using a real ultrasound, and did some simulated research courtesy of the Masonic Cancer Center team from the University of Minnesota. Yet another rotation provided the opportunity to learn about Speech Pathology, how to deliver a baby, doing a simulated blood draw, manipulating the tools of laparoscopic surgery, intubating a patient, and walk through a simulated section of the stomach. No one can forget their time with the newborn simulator staffed by our friends from the nursing school at St. Catherine University! It was a delight to have 9 former Talent Garden Summer Interns, representing all three annual cohorts of the program join us at this event, which also marks the first three years of the Talent Garden. Many thanks to the members of the Latino Medical School Association at the U of M Medical School for bringing the magic of being so close in age to these young people to our event once again. The people of Hennepin Healthcare make these events come alive as individuals and departments across our organization brought 65 volunteers in to support Latine Youth with Stethoscopes, with shifts ranging from an hour to all day. Special thanks to Dentistry, Dermatology, Pathology, the Simulation Center, Speech Pathology and the Emergency Department residents, all of whom saw each of the young people. ?If this is the kind of village it takes, I'm glad I live in it.? Add a personalized white coat, a book full of information and a great warm lunch provided by our friends at Boludo, and these young people took home information, memories, contacts, and insights that let them know that these careers are within reach. After 36 months, welcoming almost 1,000 young people to these events, and having 65 college-bound 11th and 12th graders complete our internship program, I'm still proud to say that the Hennepin Healthcare Talent Garden...Is...Just...Getting...Started. #youthsummit #HennepinHealthcare #talentgarden #healthequity #youlooklikeadoctor #boludo #nursingeducation #medicalschool #dentalschool #stcatherineuniversity #UniversityOfMinnesotaMedicalSchool #youthdevelopment #careerdevelopment #stkates #lyws #doingthework
