For more than nine decades, Hendrick Health has constantly been there to meet the wide-ranging healthcare needs of the Texas Midwest. From its humble beginnings as West Texas Baptist Sanitarium to today's expansive 500-bed facility, the hospital has grown in size and scope. At the heart of today's campus stands the original five-story building, a nucleus of its earliest brown brick and mortar, around which a steady pattern of growth has matured the facility to ten times its original size. Yet, despite the passing of time and the many changes the years have yielded, the commitment of Hendrick Health System and its staff remain the same: to deliver high quality healthcare emphasizing excellence and compassion consistent with the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.

As an encouragement for this occasion, we invite you to listen to a brief devotional prepared by our Mission and Ministry team.

Employees come from multiple departments, including Human Resources, physician clinics, nursing, radiography school and Hendrick Health Club. In honor of Black History Month, we share the story of James Edward "Ed" Turner, who is one of 100 people featured in our Centennial history book, "Hendrick Health: A Century of Healing Ministry 1924 - 2024." Two days after West Texas Baptist Sanitarium opened in September 1924, Ed was hired at the age of 33. His tasks as an orderly varied, from helping to bathe and feed patients to dressing wounds and acting as an early physical therapist in assisting the injured in taking their first steps again. Ed was among a group of employees who worked a week without pay in 1937 to help keep the hospital open during the Great Depression. In 1953, Administrator Earl Matthew Collier recognized Ed, who was the longest-serving employee at that time, as the "most popular employee to ever work at the hospital." Ed died in 1966 at the age of 75, passing away in the hospital where he made such a difference. #Hendrick100 Hendrick100.org
In this 1923 photo, construction workers pose atop the entrance to West Texas Baptist Sanitarium. More than a year before it opened on Sept. 15, 1924, a full-page newspaper ad promoting Abilene's overall health services touted the hospital with its latest medical equipment, fireproof construction and two electric elevators. As the city's population grew from 15,000, so too did the hospital with newer wings and towers to become a regional healthcare system with a 24-county service area encompassing 400,000 residents. The original building stands today as a testament to our founders' vision. Hendrick100.org #Hendrick100
