The HELLENIC-AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 72nd Person of the Year Gala honoring Mr. George Economou was held on Friday, May 17th at Casa Cipriani New York. A special thanks to the Advisory Board, Board of Directors of the HACC, all our sponsors, and to all who attended.

George Economou has opened about his motivations for his activist investor attacks on several New York-listed shipowners. And guess what? “I’m doing it to make money — there’s nothing personal in it at all,” he said with characteristic bluntness. He spoke to TradeWinds ahead of a gala dinner in New York honouring him as the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce’s Man of the Year. The 71-year-old founder of TMS Group and former CEO of public companies DryShips and OceanRig was treated with rock-star status at the ceremony before 300 guests at the posh Casa Cipriani on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. “I wanted to make money,” he told our Joe Brady. “I was thinking that a lot of these companies were undervalued. So I thought let me pick the ones that are undervalued and with upside potential. “And some of them are very undervalued because of everything that they’ve done, so they’re more vulnerable.
