Uh-oh. 87% think I'm wrong about solar risk. 87%!? I ran a poll last week to see how the LinkedIn solar community rates the risk of 7 cross-threaded connectors in a 250 kW rooftop PV system.? In my world, that's MINOR. It’s something you track, monitor, and address before or at the next scheduled O&M visit. Don't get me wrong - you shouldn't ignore cross-threaded connectors. But if they're not overheating? No other issues on-site? Don't drop everything to fix them ASAP.?That’s unnecessary O&M costs and a logistics headache. If cross-threaded connectors are the only problem on-site, the probability of a catastrophic failure event in the next six months is fairly low.? But 33% of my followers would stay on-site to fix the cross-threaded connectors immediately, which is great if they have the parts in hand and a time budget. ?52% of my followers would schedule corrective maintenance ASAP.? ?Why does this isolated workmanship problem make my followers so nervous? Here's my best guess.? Problems get lost and forgotten in solar. It happens all the time. People are concerned – with good reason - that the cross-threaded connectors will only get fixed if they take action right away.? We've all been burned before. Literally.? But fear-mongering is never the answer. If we say that cross-threaded connectors are an urgent problem, will we be believed about issues that really are major or critical??
