  • Historic U.S. Army FAA Part 141 Helicopter Flight School Pilot Program Awarded Marianna, FL – February 28, 2025 – Crew Training International (CTI) and Helicopter Institute, collectively known as Team CTI, have been awarded the U.S. Army FAA Part 141 Helicopter Flight School Pilot Program, marking a historic shift in Army aviation training. Led by the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence (USAACE), this initiative integrates civilian FAA-certified training into the military pipeline for the first time. Based in Marianna, Florida, the program will utilize the TH-66 Sage, a military variant of the Robinson R-66 Turbine. Students will follow an FAA Part 141 curriculum, earning Private Pilot, Rotorcraft Helicopter, and Instrument Helicopter certifications before transitioning to military flight training. This approach aims to enhance efficiency, improve foundational skills, and optimize training resources. Helicopter Institute brings extensive experience from its successful execution of the U.S. Navy’s Contractor Operated Pilot Training - Rotary (COPT-R) program, which has set new standards in military aviation training. “We are honored to be part of this groundbreaking effort to modernize Army aviation training,” said Randy Rowles, President of Helicopter Institute. “Our experience with the Navy’s COPT-R program has proven the effectiveness of integrating civilian FAA-certified training into military flight education. This program will elevate the quality of Army rotary-wing training and streamline the transition to military helicopter operations.” CTI has provided advanced flight training to the DoD and civilians for over 30 years. “Team CTI is committed to supporting the Army’s vision for the future of rotary-wing training,” said Matthew Black, President and CEO of CTI. “Our expertise, innovative training methods, and dedication to excellence will equip the next generation of Army aviators for success.” Robinson Helicopter Company will supply the R66 for the program. “We are proud to provide the U.S. Army with the R66,” said David Smith, Robinson’s President and CEO. “With Team CTI, we are committed to high operational availability, cost efficiency, and the safest training for our nation’s most critical missions.” This initiative marks a milestone in Army aviation training, ensuring future aviators receive world-class instruction with cutting-edge methods.

  • This week, I’ve been in Beaumont, Texas, working with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Division for their annual recurrent training. Safety and proficiency are at the core of every mission, which is why we spent the week refining both normal and emergency procedures in the OH-58, Bell 407, and UH-1H. A strong focus was placed on touchdown autorotations and law enforcement-specific flight profiles to ensure pilots are prepared for real-world emergencies. A huge thank you to my hosts for their hospitality and commitment to top-tier training. Also, a big shoutout to Helicopter Helmets for a fantastic job on the build-up of our newly acquired Gallet Helmets. The quality of work was outstanding, and the pricing was just as impressive. The built-in impedance switch between civil and military comms was a game changer! If your organization is looking for OEM-level instruction that goes beyond factory training, visit https://lnkd.in/dXRufKEH to learn more. Fly safe!
