Helicoid Industries has patented technology that will disrupt the composite industry. Growth of the composite market to its current $70 billion annually is due to numerous industries demanding lighter and stronger products with improved performance and energy efficiency. The helicoid architecture will make all composite material and products even lighter, stronger and more impact resistant while enabling a lower overall manufacturing cost. Development of the helicoid technology has occurred over the past 14 years by over 60 researchers from 16 universities and almost $12 million on R&D. The helicoid evolved millions of years ago in the internal structure of the mantis shrimp to protect its club while it pulverizes prey with incredible speed and force. UCR reverse engineered the club and determined that it is not the material, but the structure that provides the strength and toughness. The helicoid and has now been broadly patented by UCR and licensed to Helicoid Industries to commercialize its use in all composite materials.
