Despite making up nearly half of the world’s agricultural workforce — and bearing the disproportionate impact of climate change — women remain sidelined in many climate strategies. In Reuters, Heifer International CEO Surita Sandosham highlights why gender equality must be at the center of climate and agri-food policies ahead of #COP30. Investing in women farmers isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s essential for feeding a warming world. ???????? ????????: https://ms.spr.ly/6042qi0Ue #FoodSecurity #ClimateAction #GenderEquality

?????????????? ?????? ????????: Fatoumata's family never had enough food growing up. As she got older, she and her husband continually struggled to provide for their family. Then, in 2019, her husband died. "It was so hard at that time," recalls Fatoumata. "I didn’t know where to go. He was all I knew. And the children, all they knew." ?? Fatoumata was unsure how she would move forward on her own. Her son needed medical treatment that she could not afford. And she was unable to pay secondary school fees for her daughter, Awa. But then the gift of two sheep arrived from a Heifer project in Senegal. Fatoumata was trained how to keep the sheep healthy and build a safe enclosure for them. When the sheep give birth, she will give the first two ewes away, completing the Heifer International tradition of Passing on the Gift?. Then, Fatoumata will be able to sell the other offspring to finally provide for her family. Now, Fatoumata has hope, and she dreams of a brighter future for her family. "In the future I will have a very big flock of sheep, and with this herd, we will be living in good conditions." ??

At the World Food Prize Foundation Dialogue NEXT event today?in Washington, D.C., the message was clear: the global agrifood system is not ready to feed a world of 10 billion by 2050. The basic moral right to food remains unmet, and with 2024 marked as the hottest year on record, the challenges ahead are sizable. And yet, progress continues. Some key takeaways: ???Food as a Force for Unity:?On what would have been Norman Borlaug’s 111th birthday, speakers reminded us that food is more than sustenance — it’s a force that unites across borders. ???The Climate Crisis is Here:?WFP CEO Tom Vilsack and other leaders emphasized the urgent need to increase food quality, quantity and accessibility. The effects of climate change are already reducing the productivity of major staple crops, with more declines expected by mid-century. ????Food Security is National Security:?“If we don’t feed people, we feed conflict,” said Dr. Cary Fowler. More than 700 million people face food insecurity today, including 60 million children under five who suffer from stunting. The need to accelerate research and innovation is critical. ???Science and Persistence:?From the value of fundamental research to the importance of public-private partnerships, speakers like Nobel Laureates Gebisa Ejeta and John Mather of NASA highlighted how persistence leads to breakthroughs. Failures often yield discoveries — and those discoveries can change the world. ???Adapting to a Dynamic Climate:?WFP Laureate Cynthia Rosenzweig underscored that the term ‘climate normals’ is now obsolete. Increasing CO2 levels lower crop nutrient content, and the climate is no longer stationary. Continuous, adaptable research will be essential to mitigate these effects. ???Partnerships Power Progress:?“Farmers can’t plant science,” ZeaKal’s Han Chen noted. We need an ecosystem approach to agtech innovations and turning research into real-world solutions requires strong collaboration. Every dollar invested in agrifood R&D can yield a tenfold return — but patience and long-term commitment are necessary. Public-private partnerships will be essential to overcome challenges like slow regulatory processes and the long timelines for developing new crop varieties. ???New Crop Frontiers:?Beyond wheat, corn, rice, and soybeans, so-called “orphan crops” are now “opportunity crops,” offering resilience and nourishment in a changing world. The challenges are both urgent and important, but as speakers stressed, our interconnected world also presents opportunities. Collaboration across sectors and borders will be key to achieving a food-secure future.
