Sexism has infiltrated online spaces for many years. Concern about sexist rhetoric on social media is high and over a third of people believe that content moderation should be strengthened on social media apps. The latest research by TEAM LEWIS shows that women would like to see men listen, challenge sexism and actively stand as allies to help address this issue. Women’s and girls’ rights are facing unprecedented growing threats worldwide, from higher levels of discrimination to weaker legal protections, and less funding for programmes and institutions that support and protect women. UN Women’s latest report “Women's Rights in Review 30 Years After Beijing” shows that in 2024 nearly a quarter of governments worldwide reported a backlash on women’s rights. For the first time in TEAM LEWIS IWD research history, gender equality has emerged as one of the top three global issues, alongside healthcare and climate change. This shift shows progress, but there’s more work to do.
