Regardless of whether allocators share my view that Japanese stocks deserve serious consideration by long-horizon investors, I think all such investors will benefit from reading the note by veteran global investor Andrew McDermott I've linked here. Entitled "Stuff That Works. Could Japan Be Our Guide?", Andrew's note was published initially in our mutual friend Grant Williams's justly-lauded newsletter?"Things That Make You Go Hmmm ..." The February 2025 edition of that publication comprises Andrew's note plus comparably thoughtful reflections on the evolving investment environment from other accomplished investors. While not necessarily disagreeing with his fellow contributors that societal norms and capital markets are worrisomely dysfunctional these days, Andrew argues forcefully that, "Japan's companies have quietly become essential world-beaters while the finance industry has been infatuated by the China fee complex ... [T]he 'lost decades' since Japan's bubble peaked may have been 'lost' for us, but not Japan, because Japan has managed to grow corporate earnings without damaging its society." The words just quoted are among many from Andrew that could and indeed already?have caused allocators not previously invested in Japan to rethink their generally bearish long-term outlooks for that nation and shares of companies domiciled in it.
