?Today it is exactly 1 year since the Red Sea crisis was kicked into action when the Houthies hijacked the car carrier “Galaxy Leader”. During that year the crew has been held against their will on the vessel by the Houthies. The crew total 25 seafarers from the Philippines, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Mexico and Romania. The Gemini Coorporation – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd – has announced a change to their upcoming network from February 2025. In the original network their Asia-Europe services would use Felixstowe as the key hubport in the UK. This has now been changed and Felixstowe no longer features on the Asia-Europe service as the carriers have instead now shifted to London Gateway. This must be said to be a major win for London Gateway and loss for Felixstowe. Gemini’s Middle East-Europe services were already planned to use London Gateway and the Atlantic services will as planned by using Southampton. Hapag-Lloyd’s standalone China-Germany service will change rotation from January 2025. It will drop the port call in Antwerp and instead introduce port calls in Shanghai, Ningbo and Southampton. The first call in Europe will be in Southampton, which also means from an ETS perspective, the service (like a range of other services across all the major carrier) will only be liable for carbon emission tax in the EU on the journey from Southampton over to EU on the journey from Asia to Europe. Both EU and UK have now introduced sanctions against the Iranian container line IRISL. As I wrote in my update here in LinkedIn 6 months ago: “EU importers and exporters are using an Iranian shipping company to move cargo through the Red Sea – ironically a safe passage for Iranian shipping in a region where Iranian supplied misiles and drones are preventing global lines from going through.” ?With the new sanctions such a service by IRISL would only be able to call Russia, Turkey and the North African states on an Asia to Europe/Med service going forward. #containershipping #redseacrisis #Maersk #HapagLloyd #Irisl
