关于我们

At The Heckscher Museum of Art, we believe that experiencing art broadens our understanding of the past, fosters community connections to our present, and creates diverse possibilities for our future. The Heckscher Museum maintains a Collection that includes more than 2,300 works from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century, including European and American painting, sculpture, works on paper, and photography. The Museum was founded in 1920 by Anna and August Heckscher, who donated the Museum building and 185 works of art to the Town of Huntington. Mr. and Mrs. Heckscher envisioned Heckscher Park and the Museum as the center of the community’s cultural, recreational, and social life. Inspired by that vision, the Museum has championed the value of publicly accessible art and arts education for everyone.

Estiven Segovia Ticas is a talented artist and a great student, too. He’s excelling in Huntington High School teacher Kasmira Mohanty’s advanced computer graphics class. The teenager recently had one of his pieces accepted into The Heckscher Museum of Art’s Long Island’s Best exhibit later this spring “This annual juried exhibition features extraordinary works of art created by Long Island high school students from across Nassau and Suffolk counties” according to the museum’s website. “All student artwork was inspired by work exhibited in the Museum during the 2023/24 school year. Mr. Segovia was inspired by “Mama Taught me Piano and Much More” by artist Robert Carter. “I liked it because the theme centered around family,” he said. “Then I noticed Olafur Eliasson’s ‘Your House.’ Both pieces incorporated the idea of layering and I thought what if I could combine the warmth of family and layer paper. I decided to create a portrait of my abuela (grandma). We loved her a tremendous amount and she is no longer with us. My mom was devastated by her passing. I wanted to do something to help ease my mom’s pain and to honor my abuela who was most kind and caring.” The junior used Adobe Illustrator software to create the shapes for all of his grandmother’s facial features. “This was difficult to figure out how to illustrate all the different shapes because I would then have to convert the shapes from being 2D to 3D,” he said. “Once I got a handle on that I separated each shape individually so they could be cut using the new cutting machine in my classroom,” Mr. Segovia said. “Then I layered the shapes using spacers to add depth. I chose to use all white representing my abuela’s pure spirit. Once assembled the lines and shapes became symbolic of all the paths my abuela took during the course of her life and how they continue on through the lives of her descendants.” The Long Island’s Best Young Artists exhibit will run from March 23 to May 5. Of the 456 pieces of art submitted for the show, only 87 were accepted. Mr. Segovia’s was one of them. #education?#highschool?#hufsd?#huntington?#publiceducation?#school?#students

Sophia Tine has developed into an exceptional young artist. This year, the Huntington High School senior has been studying Advanced Computer Graphics with art teacher Kasmira Mohanty and the results are breathtaking. Ms. Tine’s artwork has been chosen for display at the The Heckscher Museum of Art’s Long Island’s Best Young Artists exhibit, which will run from March 23 to May 5. Of the 456 pieces of art submitted for the show, only 87 were accepted. Ms. Tine’s was one of them. “This annual juried exhibition features extraordinary works of art created by Long Island high school students from across Nassau and Suffolk counties” according to the museum’s website. All student artwork was inspired by work exhibited in the museum during the 2023/24 school year. “My artwork, ‘Eclectic Thoughts,’ was inspired by Salvador Dali’s untitled artwork in the ‘Raise the Roof’ collection at the Heckscher Museum,” wrote Ms. Tine in an artist’s statement. “When I first looked at the painting, I was mesmerized by the bold colors and surreal atmosphere it presented. Furthermore, I thought it was interesting that this piece was a collage rather than a traditional painting. These features, along with my own ideas, were the base of my project. I decided to create a collage and began to gather whatever materials I needed.” The teenager said in order to create her artwork she had to access Photoshop, a photo of a model, various pictures of plants and animals and images of vintage styled objects. “I added a black and white filter to the model to create some contrast between her and the collage,” Ms. Tine. “I created masks for the photos so it would be easier to place and warp as needed. Similar to a puzzle I placed, rearranged, and warped the pieces until I was satisfied with the results. I wanted my piece to have a surreal yet elegant feeling to it. With one final look, I feel that I have achieved what I wanted for this piece and much more.” A very solid student academically, Ms. Tine was able to spend time last summer with family members that she doesn’t regularly see. “My aunt and two cousins (eight and 17 years old) were here visiting from Denmark,” she said. “During their visit we toured Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, the Bronx Zoo and our beautiful East End. We spent our days at the beach and our nights watching outdoor movies, playing games or dining out. I also went on vacation with my family and we visited historical Charleston, South Carolina and Myrtle Beach.” The teenager’s plans for life after high school are still developing. Ms. Tine is interested in animation and the visual arts. #education?#highschool?#hufsd?#huntington?#publiceducation?#school?#students

Genesis Bautista Marroquin is gaining in confidence and stature daily. The Huntington High School sophomore is a splendid student and a rising artist. She is studying Media Art and Advanced Photography with teacher Kasmira Mohanty and making remarkable strides. Ms. Bautista’s artwork, which she titled “Bok Choy Love,” has been chosen for display at the Heckscher Museum’s Long Island’s Best Young Artists exhibit, which will run from March 23 to May 5. Of the 456 pieces of art submitted for the show, only 87 were accepted. Ms. Bautista’s was one of them. “This annual juried exhibition features extraordinary works of art created by Long Island high school students from across Nassau and Suffolk counties” according to the museum’s website. All student artwork was inspired by work exhibited in the museum during the 2023/24 school year. Participants in the Long Island’s Best initiative choose a work of art in The Heckscher Museum of Art’s collection as the starting point for their own creative process. The teenagers then interpret the respective pieces through their own art. “The quality of the artwork is exceptional and delivers a professional-level show,” exhibit organizers said. “‘Bok Choy Love’ was inspired by Helen Torr’s ‘Sea Shell’ painting,” Ms. Bautista said. “I admire the way Torr was able to suggest waves and rippling water through her stylized interpretation of a sea shell, which specifically looks like an oyster shell to me. Like Torr, I wanted to focus on nature, lines, contrasting values, and neutral tones. I stretched my imagination to decide which materials/objects could meet these requirements.” The teenager said she tried mushrooms, radicchio and baby bok choy as materials/objects. “The baby bok choy produced an effect and composition I liked best after cutting them in half and abstractly arranging them,” Ms. Bautista said. “I used Photoshop to accentuate the unique features of my photograph. I de-saturated the image about thirty percent to align with the neutral color palette in Torr’s ‘Sea Shell.’” Ms. Bautista said she overlaid a sepia tone layer to heighten the focus on the lines, terrain, and shape of the bok choy. “I enjoyed creating this image so much that I plan on doing more,” she added. #education?#highschool?#hufsd?#huntington?#publiceducation?#school?#students

The work of Helen Torr was oft-overshadowed by that of her husband, Arthur Dove. Thanks to a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and an innovative approach for telling women’s stories on the part of the Trust and the The Heckscher Museum of Art, that’s no longer the case.
