The public lands in Luna County have shaped Southern New Mexico’s way of life and the local economy for generations. Over the past decade, the breathtaking mountains and surrounding valleys have also stimulated outdoor recreation, becoming a vital economic driver. Designating a Mimbres Peaks National Monument would create new jobs and opportunities in our area, which currently faces high poverty and unemployment rates. Amplifying Hispanic/ Latino voices, promoting cultural heritage, and advocating for public lands conservation.
关于我们
Hispanics Enjoying Camping, Hunting, and the Outdoors (HECHO) is a group for Latinos who value our nation’s public lands. We work to protect healthy watersheds, clean air, and robust wildlife habitats so that we can continue to enjoy and practice centuries-old cultural traditions that depend on these open spaces. From southwestern deserts to northern forestland, Latinos throughout America have a strong connection to our nation's diverse landscapes. We urge our elected and appointed officials to safeguard our precious public lands, so that our children can enjoy fishing, hiking, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities for generations to come. HECHO provides a platform for our voices to be heard. We want decision makers to know that conservation is central to our values, grounded in our traditions, and a priority for the benefit of future generations.

Resolution Copper has conducted a misinformation campaign to mislead the American public about the proposed mine at Oak Flat in Arizona. ??MYTH: The Resolution Copper mine will provide 25% of the U.S. demand for copper. ? FACT: Resolution Copper is owned by foreign corporations, and it is highly likely that the copper extracted from the proposed mine at Oak Flat will be shipped to China. Resolution Copper has never committed to keeping the copper it plans to extract beneath sacred Oak Flat area in the U.S. for refining and sale and successfully fought congressional efforts that would have required this. The Dolores River Canyon in western Colorado is a remarkable landscape. The public lands, characterized by high desert ecosystems, are home to a rich diversity of wildlife and cultural resources, while also offering limited outdoor recreation opportunities. "We must protect these cultural resources, natural landscapes, and the activities that people are currently engaged in," says Jerry Cordova, a member of the Hispanic Conservation Leadership Council. This incredible place faces various threats. You can help safeguard it for future generations by signing a petition at ProtecttheDolores.org. #Protectthedolores #Colorado #PublicLands #conservation #water

Some precious, unprotected public lands face various threats, including vandalism, pollution, unmanaged recreation, and development. These lands include the Dolores River Canyon in Colorado and the Great Bend of the Gila in Arizona. That's why HECHO supports their designation as national monuments. Since 1906, U.S. presidents have used their authority under the Antiquities Act to protect federal public lands and waters with cultural, historical, and ecological significance by designating them as National Monuments. These remarkable landscapes will outlast us all. We must protect them for future generations. #Monumentsforall #AntiquitiesAct #Conservation #PublicLands

The Great Bend of the Gila is a volcanic landscape shaped by natural forces over millions of years. Today, it is part of the Sonoran Desert, which ranks first in biodiversity among U.S. deserts. By designating the Great Bend of the Gila as a national monument, these public lands would be protected for future generations. Sign a petition to support this designation at RespectGreatBend.org. #GreatBendoftheGila #RespectGreatBend #VisitwithRespect #Arizona #conservation

Did you know that Resolution Copper’s proposed mine in Oak Flat, Arizona, is expected to generate 1.37 billion tons of tailings, which is toxic waste? According to the Final Environmental Impact Report, this tailings site would: ??Be one of the largest tailings storage facilities in the world. ??Cover nearly 4,000 acres of a facility that spans over 8,600 acres. ??Include a three-mile-long earthen dam, taller than the 40-story Chase Building (the tallest building in Arizona), to contain the toxic, liquefied mining waste. ??Require ongoing maintenance and monitoring for safety and water quality in perpetuity. ??Pose a threat to the contamination of soil and water supplies. The permanent protection of the Great Bend of the Gila will bring many benefits to the community. Designating this landscape of Arizona a national monument would safeguard its rich cultural heritage and preserve a unique and vast natural landscape, providing opportunities for solitude and recreational activities such as hiking, camping, birdwatching, wildlife viewing, and exploring historic trails. “A simple day hike in this breathtaking landscape is a journey of discovery, offering insights into the rich history of the Southwest. The designation of a Great Bend of the Gila National Monument will help better manage these public lands in Arizona,” said Adriana Garcia, Hispanic Conservation Leadership Council member. The Supreme Court declined to consider the request from Arizona’s San Carlos Apache Tribe to stop Resolution Copper's mine from discharging water contaminated with copper, and polluting a stream considered sacred by Indigenous peoples. This request aimed to enforce stricter regulatory standards on this foreign mining company, which plans to develop and operate the largest copper mine in North America. This project poses a risk to water resources for surrounding communities. Read more in this article.
