Before his diagnosis, Maier thought that being unfit was the reason behind many of his physical restrictions. In 2022, Maier was diagnosed with Obstructive HCM. He is currently navigating his post-myectomy journey and is a very active volunteer in the HCM community. Maier is one of our HCMA Ambassadors and a member of HCMA’s Elizabeth T. McNamee Legislative Advocacy Committee, ensuring the cardiovascular health needs of all children and student-athletes are met through legislative initiatives. One simple conversation with your family and your doctor could save your life or a family member's life. In honor of Giving Tuesday and in support of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association I am sharing my personal story with HCM, the most common genetic heart disease which affects up to 1 in 200 people. The shocking part is 85% of people don't know it. This disease is screenable and treatable and one day hopefully curable in part thanks to the HCMA and their 30 year effort in making sure there is a "Center for Excellence" for the treatment of HCM within 3 hours of everyone in America. Not only that they provide travel stipends, and patient support groups. Additionally at the legisltative and advocacy level the HCMA is leading the charge to make routine family heart health history questions mandatory for all pediatrician visits and medicare intakes. This effort is on a state and federal level.
