In this episode of Caring Greatly, Bryan N. Batson, MD, discusses the changes he and his leadership team made at Hattiesburg Clinic to support team member #wellbeing. He talks about the onboarding process that supports new physicians through their first three years at the organization, a time when they are building leadership credibility, teamwork and habits that will support them throughout their tenure at the organization. Dr. Batson describes how, emerging from the pandemic, many team members asked for more chances to connect socially and how the leaders at Hattiesburg Clinic ensured wellbeing efforts extend to all care team members then and now. These efforts, and a focus on human connection, have resulted in exceptional outcomes for patients and team members alike. Patient safety depends on care team safety. This concept is at the heart of the Coalition’s Declaration of Principles. Although patient safety and care team safety are rarely talked about as being one in the same, the Heart of Safety Coalition believes they are strongly connected. This idea was echoed in the 2024 safety in healthcare report by Press Ganey. In this blog post, Liz Boehm outlines takeaways from the report that support the interconnectedness of patient safety and care team safety, which includes psychological and emotional wellbeing, physical safety and health justice for every care team member.
