In this episode of our Caring Greatly podcast, Diane W. Shannon, MD, MPH, talks about research exploring why women physicians reduce work hours or leave their professions at higher rates than their male counterparts. The reasons are far more structural and cultural than biological, including differences in expectations and accountability – both on the part of fellow care team members and of patients. Dr. Shannon also shares data about training, conformity and the needed shift to healthcare cultures that value relationships and connection over transactions. It’s an approach that generally leads to better care outcomes. Diane concludes with her perspective on how structural and policy changes can support the long-term career viability and joy in practice for women physicians and other women clinicians. Care team safety is foundational to every aspect of a healthcare organization’s mission – from patient safety to organizational resilience. Yet, only 66% of bedside team members feel their safety is valued equally with patient safety, according to new research by the Heart of Safety Coalition. To support a safe and thriving healthcare workforce, leaders must embrace an expanded definition of care team safety to include safeguarding psychological and emotional wellbeing, ensuring physical safety and promoting workplace equity and belonging for all team members. To learn more, join our next Insights Huddle on Wednesday, March 12, from 3-4 p.m. ET. Liz Boehm, Executive Strategist of the Coalition, will lead an interactive discussion on the three pillars of care team safety. Participants will learn what care team members, leaders, doctors and nursing professionals value most across the three pillars, where they agree and where they differ. These insights will help healthcare organizations align investments and communication to help restore trust and recruit and retain nurses, physicians and other healthcare professionals to build a resilient system across the care continuum. The Psychological First Aid (PFA) program at ChristianaCare is serving as a culture change mechanism to help reduce the stigma around mental health care. By giving leaders and bedside team members a shared vocabulary around safety and wellbeing, help-seeking behavior is being normalized. Christina Watlington, PhD, and Christine McGuire Chloros, MSc, joined Liz Boehm on the Caring Greatly podcast to discuss the powerful impact of the PFA and Care for the Caregiver programs, which are opening new horizons and expanding resources to support more aspects of safety, wellbeing and trauma recovery. ?
