Poison Control Centers (PCCs) are one of the original innovators of telehealth—and their impact is critical. During the COVID-19 public health emergency, PCC teleconsultations provided vital clinical support to hospitals, particularly in rural areas, helping manage overdoses and self-harm cases. A recent study found that PCCs eased the strain on emergency departments, helped reduce avoidable critical care admissions, and provided timely guidance to healthcare providers across urban and rural settings. As mental health and overdose trends continue to challenge communities, telehealth-enabled PCCs remain a key resource for delivering specialized toxicology support and improving patient outcomes.
