Job Interview Hacks: Turning Rejection into Opportunity

You don't want to know the number of jobs I've applied for and gotten rejections. The year was 2021, and the pandemic was in its advanced stages.

I quit my full-time job in August 2020 and had to get another one quickly.

So I started applying like crazy. I registered on amazing platforms like Indeed , Glassdoor , ZipRecruiter , and Jobberman Nigeria .

I recommend you get on these platforms if you are seeking job opportunities.

The remote work craze had just begun, tickling my fancy, so I jumped on the bandwagon.?

Also, Crypto was gaining so much momentum in that era, as Bitcoin hit its all-time high price of $64,800 on April 14, 2021.

Hence, this triggered the job market to start recruiting more talents into the space.

I got on platforms like Crypto Jobs List , and CryptoJobs , applying for graphic design and content writing roles.?

To cut a long story short, I applied for over a hundred jobs and, in some cases, got through to the final stages only to receive that dreaded email that every candidate never wants to receive.

I kept a good cheer through it all and didn't back down.

If you ever have rejection, know it's a step towards your dream career.?

I know a Job rejection can be a difficult experience, but it also presents an opportunity for growth and learning.

And that what we'll explore in this episode.

Reframe Your Perspective

Instead of seeing job rejection as a failure, try reframing it as a learning opportunity.

Think about what you can learn from the experience and how you can use that knowledge to improve your future job search strategies.

For example, I realized that I needed to work on my interview skills and also, update my resume to better showcase my qualifications and experience.

Expand Your Job Search Criteria

If you’ve been receiving a lot of job rejections, it might be time to expand your job search criteria.

Consider looking for jobs in different industries or locations, or consider taking on freelance or contract work to gain more experience.

This helps you broaden your opportunities and increase your chances of finding a job that’s a good fit.

Network and Build Connections

Networking is an important part of the job search process, and it can also help you turn job rejection into an opportunity. That's where LinkedIn comes in. Reach out to people in your industry or field and build connections.

Attend professional events, join online groups, and seek out mentorship opportunities.

These connections can help you learn about new job opportunities, get feedback on your job search strategy, and even lead to job offers.

Gain New Skills and Experience

Job rejection can be a sign that you need to gain new skills or experience to make yourself a stronger candidate.

Consider taking online courses, attending workshops, or volunteering in your community to gain new skills and experiences that are relevant to your career goals.

Not only will this help you become a more competitive candidate, but it can also help boost your confidence and show employers that you’re committed to your career.

Celebrate Small Wins

Celebrate small wins along the way. Even if you haven’t landed your dream job yet, take time to recognize and celebrate the progress you’ve made.

Maybe you got an interview for a job you really wanted, or maybe you received positive feedback on your resume from a recruiter.

These small wins can help keep you motivated and focused on your goals.

To Sum It Up

Job rejection is never easy, but it’s important to remember that it presents an opportunity for growth and learning. By reframing your perspective, expanding your job search criteria, networking and building connections, gaining new skills and experience, and celebrating small wins along the way, you can turn job rejection into an opportunity for success. Stay persistent, stay positive, and keep moving forward in your career goals.
