Imagine a noise being so painful it feels like someone is stabbing you in the back of your neck, and then you black out. That’s what CICADA Queensland president and Soundfair ambassador John Ross has experienced several times when his #tinnitus and recruitment were at their worst. The conditions sent him to a dark place but fortunately with love, support and treatment he has come out the other side and is now helping others. For Tinnitus Awareness Week 2025 Ross relayed his story of hope, along with Dr Emma Laird who pursued an audiology career in part due to her own tinnitus. Caitlin Barr Tegan Keogh

Meredyth Haynes?transitioned from nursing to #audiometry after being diagnosed with #HearingLoss. The move changed her life for the better, seeing her become a partner and director in three Specsavers Audiology stores in Perth in just 19 months. Swapping careers in middle-age is no easy feat, but Haynes says she has been "pretty much fully booked" from the day she opened the doors at all three stores. Children who play #video games are more likely to develop #HearingLoss than non-gamers, the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have warned after launching the first global standard for safe listening in video game play and esports on World Hearing Day #WHD2025. They said children who actively participate in video gameplay activities are?twice as likely?to have high-frequency hearing loss compared to non-players. They risk permanent hearing loss from prolonged exposure to loud sounds while gaming or listening to music. More than one billion young people are at risk of hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices such as prolonged exposure to video games and loud music, they added.

HEARING BUSINESS ALLIANCE's biggest ever event got off to a great start in #Melbourne today with a record 184 delegates enjoying a jam-packed speaker line-up of quality presentations relevant to today’s independent audiologists. Speakers from research, industry and government covered a variety of topics, and keynote speaker Dr Cliff Olson from the US reminded practitioners, in the first of five presentations, to ‘innovate inside your clinic and disrupt yourself before someone else disrupts you.’ Attendees at the HBA 2025 Seminar also caught up on the latest technology and innovations to help their businesses at an extensive trade show. There’s plenty more to come at the weekend focussing on the seminar’s theme, the importance of innovation in transforming small business models. Hearing Practitioner Australia will cover the event with a story on its website next week, and a larger feature detailing speaker presentations in our upcoming April-May magazine. Binaural pitch fusion is one type of central #hearing processing that may still be developing in pre-adolescent children and could present an opportunity for treatment, American researchers have suggested. The?study, from Dr Lina Reiss and Dr Jennifer Fowler from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), is the first to suggest this. Binaural pitch fusion is a process that involves merging different pitches from each ear into a single sound. The children in the study had typical hearing, hearing aids, or cochlear implants. It followed children from age six to 14, and revealed that processing of sounds across the ears was still developing in this age range, with binaural fusion sharpening on a scale of octaves even in children with typical hearing.
