We're thrilled to share that our organization created 25,000 seed packets in 2023 to 2024, sending one home with every student across our 52 partner schools! Even better, we’ve received photos from nearly half of these schools, showing students planting and using their seeds at home. Together, we're veggie-cating the First State! We share the joy of vegetable gardening and nutritious eating to inspire kids to lead a healthy lifestyle!
关于我们
We are the First State's school garden experts! Our mission is to inspire healthier lives by providing youth with joyful school gardening experiences and opportunities to eat the garden-fresh vegetables they’ve grown. Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids (HFHK) is the only Delaware organization that works with schools to design and implement vegetable gardening programs that engage EVERY child in a school in two “seed-to table” growing seasons each year. Our model makes it possible and practical for schools to integrate vegetable gardening into the school day and academic year, and to strengthen science education while promoting student health. As a result, we currently serve more than 30 schools. Outcome goals for our students include increased agricultural and environmental literacy, enhanced understanding of the importance of vegetables as part of a balanced diet, and better understanding of essential science concepts. Our vision is a vegetable garden in every school, leading to generations of healthy families throughout Delaware. Though we are a small organization, we are well integrated into the community, and belong to nonprofit networks including the Delaware Urban Farm and Food Coalition and the Delaware Food Research Network. As a result of our partnerships with school nutrition programs, we were the only Delaware recipient of the inaugural USDA Farm to School Grant in 2012. Please follow us on social media, or at our website www.healthyfoodsforhealthykids.org, as we continue to grow and expand our program to teach the joys of gardening and healthy foods to youth across the First State!

What a day! A phenomenal group of volunteers and partners worked through the oppressive heat yesterday to build a new garden at Gallaher Elementary School. Thank you to the New Castle Conservation District for helping to fund this project. And we are thankful to the Christina School District for not only helping to fund the rebuild but for sending Wes and the front-end loader to move the soil! We couldn't have done it without him! Special thanks to our friends from Brown Advisory and Nemours for their help and to the staff and students from Gallaher and the district! We have several more rebuilds and builds this summer and we work to #veggiecatethefirststate! Interested in helping at a future build? Send us a message!

Thanks to some amazing volunteers we were able to rebuild Downes (John R.) Elementary School's garden last week! Despite the heat, new garden beds were built, placed and filled with soil! We are so thankful for this hardworking crew! And HFHK is thrilled that the students will be growing in their garden and will once again enjoy garden fresh vegetables! Thank you to the Christina School District for valuing #schoolgardens and funding this rebuild! #veggiecatethefirststate
