Join us for lunch, learning, and conversation at the next installment of the HEROP Speaker Series on Friday, October 25th at 12 PM CDT. Coffee and networking session to follow. For folks outside of the UIUC community, please join us via Zoom! Go to: https://lnkd.in/gbHmy3XV for more info. In this talk, Catalina will share her design-driven inquiry into body mapping as research-action to explore and intervene in postpartum experiences by Latina women living in the US. By engaging with design theory, feminism, theater and body awareness, Catalina explores ways of “entering the body” as a territory that can be mapped, in connection to place: intimate family spaces, hospitals and birthing centers, the space where we migrated from, and larger social spaces that impact our health and wellbeing. Through mapping, postpartum is explored beyond a mental health issue, to be distributed across physical and bodily systems. She will describe the affordances of body maps such as anatomic drawings and acupuncture diagrams, to propose a sensory-driven form of mapping that explores the body as storage of trauma, maps as narratives, and pushes for communal aesthetics in graphic design. ?? Catalina Alzate Catalina Alzate, MFA, is an Assistant Professor in the Graphic Design program at UIUC's School of Art & Design. She explores feminist and critical theory through participatory design and systems design, focusing on emerging technologies and community well-being. Her research interests include the representation of bodies in healthcare, parenthood as a cultural construct, and Justice frameworks. Catalina's professional experience spans Colombia, India, and the US, working in graphic design, research, start-up incubators, and consulting on design, gender, and social justice. ??In-person or Virtual? ?? The?in-person?RSVP option is open to the?University of Illinois community?(students, staff, and faculty). We will have lunch for all attendees who RSVP by Wednesday @10a before the event. RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/gbHmy3XV A?virtual option?via Zoom is available for the?public.?To register for the Zoom option, access the following link:?https://lnkd.in/gDi8Az4V. ?? About the Series ?? The HEROP Speaker Series connects scholars, experts, and innovative thinkers to discuss different conceptual, methodological, and technological facets of public health to better understand the social determinants of health, and how place may influence outcomes. The Healthy Regions & Policies (HEROP) Lab integrates innovative GIScience, public health, and statistical approaches to explore, understand, and promote healthy places. We’re experts in the spatial & social determinants of health. We're based out of the Dept of Geography & GIScience at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

??Call For Papers—Metrics and Beyond: Exploring the Structural Drivers of Health & SDOH ?? ??Geospatial Health Symposium, AAG Annual Meeting 2025, Detroit, Michigan ??Submission Deadline: October 31st, 2024 The Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) refer to the wide range of political, economic, social, and cultural factors that significantly impact an individual’s physical and mental well-being. Structural Determinants of Health approaches shift the focus from individual or intermediate-level determinants upstream to the fundamental drivers of health. Consequently, innovative, interdisciplinary, and intersectional methodologies are needed to enhance our understanding of the connections between SDoH and place at multiple scales. Researchers in geography and related disciplines have the unique opportunity to unravel the intricate and multidimensional aspects of SDoH from a spatial perspective. Effectively delineating SDoH’s spatial dimensions holds the potential to refine current research in public health, enrich the awareness of the role of places within health policies, and advance health equity in urban and rural environments. However, measuring SDoH and structural determinants requires robust conceptual and methodological foundations to understand the relationships between spatial factors and health outcomes. Further, moving beyond strictly quantitative work and engaging with communities across stages of the research process provides opportunities for a more in-depth understanding of SDoH. These talks aim to deliberate on how diverse and complementary geographic perspectives and methodologies can enrich the conceptualization and research of SDoH. Building from AAG 2024’s Place & the Social-Spatial Determinants of Health Symposium, we invite submissions of academic papers and research-creation practices that address this challenge. Topics of Interest Include: -Conceptualization of SDoH with a focus on geospatial perspectives (and the Social Spatial Determinants of Health) -Intersectional, risk environment, sociological, and other conceptual framework adoptions in SDoH research -Understudied aspects of SDoH in geospatial research -Approaches to SDoH data collection, with emphasis on qualitative and mixed methods approaches -Human-centered design incorporated into geospatial SDoH study design? -Co-production in geospatial SDoH research -Open Science as used over the study course and as a tool for community engagement -Community-based cartographies to assess health disparities ?? If you feel your talk is a good fit for our session, submit your abstract by October 31st, 2024. We welcome both in-person and virtual presentations. ?? How to Submit: Send your abstract code (PIN), paper title, contact information, and presentation mode to Catherine Discenza at [email protected]! Session Organizers: José Alavez, Marc Astacio-Palmer, Catherine Discenza, Finja Hinrichs, Marynia Kolak
